  • Undo 10 steps 50 steps back? Work-around?

Posted by Jill Simpson on February 4, 2009 at 3:15 pm

If I make an editing decision, then continue editing, then get to a point where I can see I should change the early editing decision, but all the other editing is good, is there a way I can undo just the early decision?

In simple cases I can just (for example) remove an added effect, or change a transition type, or extend the edge of a clip until it reaches its original length.

If there are several complex changes, however, I want a better way.

If the later changes (the wanted changes) are separated on the timeline from the early edits I want to undo, I could copy and paste the later, wanted changes into another project file, then undo back to before the unwanted changes, then replace the later-edited sections with the wanted changes. (I can’t seem to make that clearer.)

If the later, wanted changes are not separated on the timeline from the early, unwanted changes, what can I do?

If I think I might change my mind, I could save versions of the project, but I fear ending up with more versions than I can make sense of.

I could create scenarios, where I do ‘extreme non-destructive editing’: before editing, I would copy the section-to-be-edited onto a muted “backup” track. Or conversely, I copy the section to an “experimental” track and edit it instead of the original.

What do you do? / What would you do?
(If you think I’ve got it all wrong, do tell.)

    keyword phrase: “undo history”

I stand to be corrected but I don’t think Vegas will allow you to do exactly what you want.
On complex projects, I got into the habit of saving an updated version after every few timeline changes.
    I think my record is 80 🙁
If I want/need to go back to a previous version, I start a new instance of Vegas and start loading old versions until I get the one I want.
Then it’s a simple copy/paste from old to new, resave as a newer version and keep on working.

The simple answer is no. The “undo” is saved in incremental steps of changes and as such there is no way to go back and just select the one edit you don’t want and maintain the rest forward of that point. I do pretty much what Mike does so that when I come to a point that the change would be time consuming to manually undo or if I have doubts I create a separate Save using the date as a reference and any other info that would help me remember. I also like to create my own edit log with more details on what I did and what I was thinking. For that I use my word processor program. It adds a little to the work flow but later on when I cannot remember what I did and such it saves the day. You ask some great questions Jill…

Joe & Jill, VASST has a free tool called Notepad (not the one that comes with your OS!!) that you might find useful.

Here’s what the blurb about it says:

As the name implies, Notepad is a place where you can maintain notes about your project. These notes can be saved in the project file or as a separate RTF document along side the project file. Because Notepad is a Vegas Command Extension, it is a dockable window that can be placed in the dock alongside the other Vegas tabbed windows. It can remain always open in Vegas Pro and will auto-load your notes with your projects.

Requires: Vegas Pro 8.0b or later.

Yes, Discreet edit* had an undo history LIST, for the entire project, so you could go back to any part of your project, as many or few steps as you wanted, with ease. I still really miss that feature!
