Sync problems while exporting
Hi everyone–
I have one clip in my sequence where the audio was out of sync on the actual tape. In Final Cut, I was able to align it so that it matched up with the video. However, when I go to export, FCP realigns the video and audio how it was on the tape, which is not usable.
I’ve tried going to modify and unlinking the video from the audio but it hasn’t helped. How can I get my sequence to export just as it is on the timeline without it “trying to fix itself”?

hi Kathleen,
I’m not 100% sure but I think the audio can not be out of sync in tape. The camera have no way to store or hold a piece of audio or video so it can not record one after the other. As is captured in ca,era. is compressed and recorded together.
I think is more possible that the audio and video had get out of sync on capture.
When you put them on sync again in FC they should remain like that. So in sync when you print them back to tape.
How did you captured and how are you printing to video?
What kind of media drives are you using?

Instead of us both trying to figure it out it might be faster to do something like export the audio to Soundtrack Pro, save it and send it back to FCP. Sync up the new audio, mute the original and print to tape. Since the STP audio file now has a different filename FCP may leave everything alone.
Just a shot in the dark.

PS – you did try trashing FCP prefs first, right?

Tried the Soundtrack Pro suggestion; gave the audio a new file name and manually put it into the sequence, lining it up with the video, but when I exported again…same problem.
Also trashed the FCP preferences.
I’m 99% sure it was like this on the tape, because I remember going to recapture it and not being able to and wondering what would cause a lag from the mic to the tape..? I’ll look for the tape right now to be certain..
I captured using a Sony Mini-DV camera and firewire cable; I’m trying to export using Compressor to encode for a DVD, but I’ve tried this a couple different ways..exporting as quicktime and quicktime conversion..same problems.

I’ve also tried exporting video and audio separately and then putting them into DVD Studio Pro..no luck!

Just curious, did this footage come from a DV tape??
I think the DV codec in FCP is having quite a few issues right now.Dual 2.5 G5, IO, Kona LH, IO, Medea Raid, UL4D, NVidia 6800, 4Gig RAM

Yep, it is from a Mini-DV tape..
