There have been a lot of analogies and metaphors trying to explain the big switch… but hands down, this is the best I’ve read so far! In response to your latest post, I too agree that the ‘lesbian’ fad will eventually give way and that your wife of ten years will come knocking at the door, begging for your forgiveness and armed with tricks now suitable for her loyal and faithful husband…

I’ve had to figure this out so thought I’d post my results for the next guy. My solution for copying youtube clips for use in FCP is the following:
1. Find clip in youtube then open Activity Monitor in Safari – command/option/A.
2. Find the link by scanning file sizes, largest one (5mb, etc) should be it. Double-click to download on desktop.
3. The file will probably be called VideoClip. Add the extension .flv
4. To confirm, you can play the file with VLC
5. Open the File in MPEG Streamclip (you may need to download the Perian plug-in at perian.org and restart the app, as I did)
6. Tada! Export using Quicktime -

I have a Canon XH A1 and I’ve been recording narration using it’s mic LIVE via firewire, straight to the harddrive. I just checked my settings. Capture Preset – HDV. Device Control – HDV Firewire. I capture using “Capture Now” – the rest are grayed out. Works just fine.
But for this to work properly, I have to turn my camera on before loading FCP, and there has to be a tape in the camera that engages. Once FCP opens, I open log and capture and I’m good to go from there – stop and start, for as long as I want. If I don’t do this fast enough and the tape disengages from the camera’s heads, it won’t work. If I turn the camera on after opening FCP, it won’t work.
I can’t see this being any different with a Sony camera. Give it a try and let me know.

The new imacs make the existing Mac Pros look sooo bloody expensive as well. It’d be hard to justify buying one now until the refresh comes out — and when, can I ask, might that be?? I’m reading rumors of a new macbook air, a new macbook pro even, but how bout the biggest, baddest of the bunch?

I’m sure everything “screams” compared to what I’m working on. And yes, I’m on a PowerPC and you’re now the second person to challenge this admission like it’s some kind of plea for attention or dirty little secret…
As for July, I hope you’re right. Makes sense to me to showcase Lion and FCP X on a spankin’ new Mac Pro w Thunderbolt. But if it’s not going to be till 2012, I might just have bite the bullet and buy one of those second-rate puppies that are out now. Of course I jest… :)))

huh? I’m running 6.0.6 which is doing the job just fine, except when compositing… but now I’ve finally got some money put aside for a new tower. Only I don’t want to be one of those suckers who buys one a week before the new model comes out that will “change everything!”.

Thanks for all the replies. I didn’t mention it but this is kind of a freebie project so cost might prohibit me from providing to some theatres when others have already agreed to Blue-ray — which is why I was asking. Cheers…
