compressing to offer a movie as a free download via iweb
Hi all,
I’m building a site with iweb to give away copies of a movie I shot. I usually use compressor’s “H.264 for ipod video and iphone 640×360” setting, and change the audio to 256kb, when working with the web. I find this quite browser friendly. But one can only download a copy after it’s loaded if they have Quicktime Pro (which in most cases is a scary thought!). Should I use H.264 settings stored in the QT folder instead – will they give me what I want? Or do I need to link people to zipped files that they can download to their computers and transfer to their various devices? The film is 6 minutes in length. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a Mobile Me account? You can create a Movie in your Gallery and they can download from there.
Dropbox is a free option if the file size is under 2 gb.

Your question has nothing to do with compressor and everything to do with how iaweb handles video files.
If you are using mobile me I would copy the file to your iDisk and then log in to me.com and go to the iDisk section and then to your file. You can then choose to share that file. Once shared you can copy the web link it gives you and imbed that as a link from ether a photo or text indicating click here to download.

Wouldn’t that link simply load up the QT and play it in the browser? Safari plays QTs by default, not save them to disk. That’s what he was referring to. That they’d have to wait until it was loaded, and then click in the lower right corner and do a save movie as. However, put the movie in a zip file, and provide a link to that and it will download straight to your download folder. I would make two files potentially. A zipped file, and a movie file. Provide a link to each, with the wordings being “click to download video” and “click to play.” You could also just provide a link to the video, and note that to download, right click the link and choose to save the linked file.

NOPE the url it gives you is files.me.com/username/file.mov
It is a download only link. Share a file with your mobile me account and test it for yourself.

Curious, why not host it on Vimeo HD, and then embed that video in a custom created ‘Theatre’ page on your site. No mess, no fuss.
