This sounds very strange. Your composite mode is ‘Normal’, right? You’re opacity is 100 throughout, right? If you copy this clip into a new timeline, do you get the same results? Is it fully rendered, not showing any color bars?

I actually have the Canon XH A1. Since 85% of your footage is shot using that, I personally would keep your timeline HDV (to match, and to keep the file sizes down) and set your Render Codec to Apple Pro Res. If you need to transcode your 550D footage to ProRes, do that and bring it into the timeline. (You may then need to render that.) You won’t notice a difference in quality between HDV and Pro Res, but there is no need to transcode what you don’t have to (the HDV footage). When ready to output, you’ll have the option of going SD for DVDs or keeping it HD for web. Better to keep your options open and retain the highest quality possible. Just my opinion.

If given the option, I would always shoot with the highest resolution possible (at least when you’re talking 1080 vs 720). You might think you know your end distribution now, but what if that changes in the future? If you’re concerned with the output to DVD, run a test. If you don’t see any difference, go with 1080. That’s my vote!

So you’re saying when the new thunderbolt-equipped Mac Pro finally comes out (rumored to be soon), it will only run FCP X? No way to get FCS 3 or 2 or DVD SP on there?? No way at all, no work around? Please don’t burst my bubble, I’ve been waiting eagerly all year… 🙁

“I almost bought a brand new MBP about a month ago that had SL installed on it and was given the option of keeping that or having them upgrade it to Lion. So if they can run both, I don’t understand why the consumer couldn’t just install the OS of their choice. Is nothing backward compatible anymore?? This just might suck! (Off to do more research…)

First of all, the Apple guys who supplied you with this “information” (if you want to call it that) are idiots. Secondly, I don’t understand people on a fcp forum advising you to go with Adobe. I too am a FCS 2 user (vs 6.0.6) planning to upgrade my hardware if and when the new Mac Pro comes out. From what I’ve gathered, FCP 6 will work fine with Lion but will only install with Snow Leopard (or before). So do a little research on that and you should find your answers. Seems you’ll need to downgrade to Snow Leopard, then install FCS 2 from the disks in your possession, then bada boom – you’re ready to go. Users have reported FCS 2 working just fine in Lion (having upgraded from SL) – it’s just a matter of getting it there.
If I’m wrong, I’m sure someone will soon humble me. If not, good luck and happy editing!

This sounds like an issue with Lion if Lion is indeed installed on the iMac. Look that up, you’ll find that you’ll need to bring studio in with Snow Leopard… A challenge I’ll soon be facing.

Great tips and advise. Thanks for that. I’m still reading up on how to bring FCS 2 into Lion – either with Migration Setup (anyone know if this will work?), or by first downgrading to Snow Leopard…

Didn’t they just update the Migration Setup tool? Can I not just connect my old MacPro with whatever I buy running Lion and bring FCS 2 over that way? If not, thanks for the workaround.

I’m in the same boat here. Need to upgrade my hardware as my Mac pro is just barely clinging to life. What are the options? Buy a new mbp (or whatever) w lion, downgrade to snow leopard (if that’s possible), install fcs2 (from disks? Then update?), then… If want be… install lion? Or B) upgrade to fcs3 (expensive and otherwise unnecessary)? Any other options?
For myself, I need to continue cutting a project on 6.0.6, but like I said, my Mac pro (2004) could surrender it’s will to function any day…
