Hey boys, I have the same setup, though I’m using FCP 6, and have had no problems capturing HDV 1080p30. The trick is to FIRST make sure your camera is hooked up to your Mac with firewire. Turn on the camera, and while the heads are engaged, THEN launch FCP. If you’re settings are correct (I forget, HDV Firewire Basic I think) then you should be good to go.
If I try turning the camera on after launching FCP, I have the same problem as you guys. Won’t read it.

Hey Leia, I’m from Canada and it’s good to see someone else in the same predicament! Only difference it appears is that I have the Thunderbolt display, and that’s where my only issue lies. It’s either lag time or screen tearing, whatever you want to call it. But I get the occasional ripple or wave in the picture, most noticeably during pans or movement on screen. I don’t need a TB hub however. That’s one of the main reasons why I bolt the display, for the FW port, and accessibility to my external drive. That, and a new Mac Pro should surely be compatible with this, and then I’m sailing!
The 1TB TB Lacie Big Disk is $449 on this side of the pond. Probably similarly priced there.
Good luck with everything. And if I do any render compares between your G5 and Macbook Air, I’d be curious to know the results.

Jerry, interesting thought, but I’m working with HDV 1080 30p. Nothing interlaced.
I have to assume it’s a deficiency caused by my Macbook Air not being up to snuff to handle this task. I’m hoping others can vouch for this, ’cause I’d hate to think it’s my brand spankin’ new display…
Leia, I wish I knew where to direct you, but in my research I happened upon a download of Rosetta which saved me from having to find and purchase a SL disk. As for the Lacie TB drive, I too wonder if that would improve my situation… but it’s another $500! Bring on the new Mac Pro is all I can say!

Yes, with Telus. 3 different Telus agents tried to help me, even coming on to my computer remotely, and they all said it’s a problem with Mac Mail and one of it’s advanced settings and to contact Apple. They said SSL should be deselected. So obviously I’ve tried every foreseeable scenario and last night I selected SSL. It connected to port 993 and for 10 minutes was working perfectly, automatically and instantly receiving my test messages. Then on the fourth test (this is how suspicious I am), it wouldn’t retrieve and I got the exclamation symbol. Today, SSL selected or not, it will not retrieve my email without my ridiculous work-around (mentioned above).

Hey… interesting to see this thread woken up. With my XH A1, I only need the tape engaged when I open the Log & Capture window. This gives me the ‘Now’ option. The tape soon disengages but that doesn’t prevent me from capturing live from there on, stop & start. However, if I close the Log & Capture window and try to reopen it, I won’t get the ‘Now’ option and have to start over from the beginning… But in response to your comment, Derek, I don’t need to be recording on tape simultaneously.

Doug, I import psd files quite frequently. I only ever import photoshop files that are sized according to my fcp timeline. For example, when working with HDV, I use the photoshop HDV 1440×1080 setting. I control the image there, then import and everything is fine – exactly as it was in photoshop. Sometimes you need to reset the x and y position and make sure scale is 100 as fcp tends to alter on occasion. But I’ve never had problems with aspect ratio or cropping following this method.
One more thing…
If you need to zoom or pan an image, I highly recommend finishing your photoshop work in its original, large scale file, then copying the layers over to a new file that matches the fcp timeline (i.e. 1440 x 1080) and scaling there, in photoshop, leaving the visible image in its final desired state or size. That way, when you import this file and then drag out the layers (if you need an explanation of this, let me know), you’ll know that in fcp your end result will always be 100% scale, 0 X 0 Y. You can then start with whatever scale and position you want, knowing how to get to this.

What iTunes version did you update to? I have FCP 6.0.6, iTunes 10.5, QT 7.7, and I have absolutely no problems playing HDV. I agree with Rafael. Just run software update. If you’re concerned, you can report here what it’s telling you to install and see what people say…

Is your computer possessed?? Just kidding. Are we talking FCP or STP? What version? Do the files move out of sync also? I can’t help you on this, but maybe with more information, someone else can. Good luck!
