Should we shoot 720p or 1080p?
Our end product as of right now is:
DV Pal on tape for broadcast
DV Pal on DVD
720p and 360p on internet.Wondering if were best to be shooting in 720p as that is where our end product is?
Is there a quality loss if we shoot 1080p so we are able to do fake pans and dollys and stablize shots without quality loss, and then downconvert it to the above formats?
Our company may indeed in the future start broadcasting HD, and in Australia i’m assuming thats 1080i. We would not need to rebroadcast any of our older material, so I guess we could just start shooting 1080p at that point. But not sure how well 1080 converts to DVD, compared to 720?
Basically just want some clarification on what to shoot now. I’ve heard 720p has the same 35Mbps as 1080p, and that has shown to be true from our camera, but I do not see any quality improvement even with that fact between the 720 and 1080.
Any thoughts are appreciated

Shot 720p.
Too much resolution instead of an advantage end up being a burden.

If given the option, I would always shoot with the highest resolution possible (at least when you’re talking 1080 vs 720). You might think you know your end distribution now, but what if that changes in the future? If you’re concerned with the output to DVD, run a test. If you don’t see any difference, go with 1080. That’s my vote!

Standard deliverable for HD broadcast in Australia is HDCam 1080 50i.

Then yes shot 1080.
For SD and smaller, no advantage in shooting 1080, unless you intend to zoom, pan, etc.In the other hand, in FCP there is not any decent downscaling option.

That’s right.
You are allowing more data/pixel = more quality.

Yeah but u just can’t see the quality so it counts for nothing. I’m wondering if shooting 1080 and sticking in 720 sequence may be the goer. Is there a quality lose in fcp for the fact it will use the basic motion scale setting to resize? Like a loss big enough to justify just shooting straight 720.

what means that?
That YOU don’t see the difference doesn’t mean there is not a difference and that this will shows up at the end of the process.
Some times you won’t see the difference between EX-1 (420) and XDCAMHD-422. Try to make some CK or Color Correction.[Craig Ricker] “I’m wondering if shooting 1080 and sticking in 720 sequence may be the goer”
I finish most things in 720 and SD.
I shot things in 1080 because I archive a lot and I don’t know if I’ll ever will need to edit it in 1080.
When I make DVDs for clients i shoot 720.is not just about size, but also about processing a huge amount of info that will be trashed.
FC up/downscaling is really poor. Even compressor makes a quite average job.
