MacBook Pro 2011 – Any issues with fcp?
Posted by Christopher Mcdonell on August 13, 2011 at 4:31 pmI need to upgrade my hardware and I’ve been holding off for the MacPro refresh w thunderbolt which doesn’t seem to be arriving anytime soon. The portability of the MacBook Pro is quite enticing, however I’ve been reading about heating issues and am concerned about fans running all the time and being quite a distraction. At this point I’m primarily cutting w hdv, multiple layers and effects, still using fcs2 (6.0.6). I’m looking at either the high-end 15 or 17″ model. Can someone advise me? Thanks as always guys!

August 13, 2011 at 7:22 pm17 is the only model with an express card. Important if u will be using aja or Matrox external monitoring. Or if u need esata, u will need an adapter.

Don’t forget, Thunderbolt will be making the express card obsolete in the very near future.

August 13, 2011 at 8:44 pmMy friend has the 2011 17in MBP and has been using FCP 7 on it for months with no problems. Don’t know about FCP 6.

August 14, 2011 at 7:05 pmEasy there mate. A new computer will come with OS X Lion. I think the only way to get FCS2 on a Lion machine is to have it working on Snow Leopard and then upgrade to Lion. The FCS2 installer (and only the installer) relies on Rosetta if memory serves correctly – which is not a part of Lion. You might do some research and see if there is a way to install FCS2 onto Lion.

August 15, 2011 at 5:52 pmI’m using the lower end model 15″, and am having no real problems to speak of. As a matter of fact, I’m exporting from AE right now, and the fans just kicked in. Not much louder than my playback deck. They usually only kick in during renders and exports.
FCP 7 has been working without any real issues….sometimes a slight lag when hitting play, but not a deal breaker. I attribute it to 1 of two reasons…the lower end graphics card (unlikely), or I’ve still only have 4 gigs RAM installed.
A couple of MUSTS. Go for the high resolution screen. This is standard on the 17″. Matte finish is dealers choice; I really don’t have a problem with the glossy finish.
Skinny USB extensions, or a hub. The ports are too close together to use more than 1 usb device in most cases….the narrow extensions can rectify that.
If you can afford it, go with the better processor in the 15″. It comes with the better graphics card, but the big key is you can’t upgrade processors later. Screen and RAM can be upgraded after purchase, but not the processors. (I got a great deal on my MBP, and it had the better screen, so in that case I’ve ignored my advice)
My only complaint about this complaint I have right now, is that it does get hot when on your lap, and they have been VERY slow in releasing thunderbolt devices and adapters….I’m hoping/waiting for TB to eSata converter. Hopefully one day….

August 15, 2011 at 6:26 pmGreat tips and advise. Thanks for that. I’m still reading up on how to bring FCS 2 into Lion – either with Migration Setup (anyone know if this will work?), or by first downgrading to Snow Leopard…

August 15, 2011 at 8:19 pmI am using it with Snow Leopard and FCS 3, FW 800 drives and a Matrox mini in the slot. No issues.
