Now i see. But do you have to change Video Format? Doesn’t it just read your source?

You should be able to do this. I think I know your problem. My guess is that you’re trying to make the changes from the original setting in Inspector, but the key is to first drag it to the top (your preview window will open up), then make changes, then Save As a new setting. You may then need to start over, dragging your newly named setting onto your file, and all should be good.

As for capturing with the Canon XHA1, either you’re shooting SD (DV) or HDV, right? HDV is 3.1 MB/s, which is the beauty of it. You can choose to capture in a different codec (which is what you’re doing in imovie) but that’s not going to improve your picture in any way. In fact I think most would discourage you from capturing to AIC as it’s likely a downgrade (look it up). For editorial reasons, the preferred codec for HDV is ProRes. But you’re totally fine to just capture to HDV (especially if you have limited hard drive space) and maybe render with ProRes. That’s what I do. And by the way, I’ve got the same camera…

From what I’ve gathered, there’s not many ways to ingest .mst files (ACVHD) other than Toast 10. To keep file sizes down, and since I’m only outputting for DVD, I used one of the pre-chosen selections (DV 16:9) which automatically rescales the image to 720*480 with letterboxing. I think the picture actually looks fine when played in QT. The inspector reads Apple Pro Res 422 720 * 480 – normal size, current size (actual) reading the same. 29.97 fps. Field order: progressive.
And actually, now that you’ve asked me to do this, I’ve just compared the QT image w FCP, laying them side by side, and FCP definitely needs to show square pixels for these perspectives to match. The ‘correct for aspect ratio’ is therefore greyed out. The pixel aspect ratio of the files, as shown in FCP, is CCIR-601 though… If I use this setting for Pixel Aspect Ration in sequence (not Aspect Ratio), the picture becomes distorted. Hmm… And I believe this is how it defaulted… (I assume I can set Compressor the same way, for output).
Now how do I get the photoshop graphics to come in correctly?

Is your device control set to HDV 1080 60i Firewire Basic, as opposed to just 1080 60i? Wherever there is a “firewire basic” option, I think you have to select that one.
When you say there is communication btwn the camera and computer, what do you mean? Does the panel read “VTR OK”, or “NO COMMUNICATION”? Should obviously be the first. Otherwise, there’s no communication. I’m just saying this in case you mean your computer reads the camera, as indicated in About Mac/More Info.
I know you need FCP vs 6 for HDV 30p. I think if vs 5 has the codec you want (i.e. HDV 1080 60i), then you should be fine.
Don’t know what else to say. Problem fixed yet?

Hmm. I’m on FCP 6.0.6, and use the 1080 30p preset. But… I am also the proud owner of a Canon XH-A1 and have been capturing just fine. Like you’ve probably determined, the camera needs to be plugged in to the computer via firewire before opening Final Cut. Otherwise, it won’t read. If you’re doing the “Capture Now”, I’ve found that you have to play camera first, wait a beat, then hit the button. This will give FCP time to read the incoming data and should capture everything from the first frame onward. If you’ve been hitting the Capture Now button first, then playing camera, then surely this is your problem.

I would like to hear more on this. I’m using 6.0.6 with 7.6.6 and I am experiencing problems, though they could be related to a number of other things.

Damn, I wish you were right! There’s nothing I’d love more than to find some green liquid oozing out of my computer so I can solve the riddle that’s been plaguing me for months and get a brand new Mac for free. But… my single processor G5 2.0 (2004) is not on the list of leaking coolant suspects. And I’ve been inside it poking around multiple times and haven’t seen or smelt any goo. I strongly assume it’s an air-cooled machine. Can someone prove me wrong?
In the meantime, I’m going to try to rule out the Maxtor harddrive and clone the OS onto an external drive and boot up from that…

Alright Jim, I took your advice and ran fsck in single user mode. Strangely, the fans came on and roared like crazy during the process, which usually results in a crash. But no crash. Two tests though gave my Macintosh HD an OK.
I swear this webpage alone is eating up my computer’s performance. istat pro shows the cpu at 77% user, and no other applications are open. Does that sound indicative of video card, or processor, or logic board??? I’m leaning heavily towards this being a hardware issue now.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. Hundred bucks for Disk Warrior? Or the same to take it back to an Apple dealer for another diagnostics test? Hmm. Lemme think.
Incidentally, I’ve been running Activity Monitor and the flash content on this site is maxing out my CPU usage. Literally 100% user. With nothing else running but Safari. Does this offer any clues? (I wish…)
