    Hi,

I’m trying to resolve a few things and could use some help. I’ve ingested AVCHD footage (the .mst files) using Toast 10. Since I’m outputting for DVD and nothing else, I converted to Pro Res 422, size = DV 16:9. I checked keep perspective and use letterbox if necessary. (It shows in brackets a perspective of 853*480.) I’m using FCS 2 and have a sequence to match the clips. However, I’m confused about whether to use a square pixel aspect ratio, or CCIR-601 NTSC DV. The quality of the camera’s not great and I’ve been staring at the picture so long that I don’t really trust my eyes, however I’m leaning towards square. Can someone clarify?

Another issue is bringing in graphics. I use photoshop’s standard layouts and when I bring in 720*480 DV, the picture is stretched vertically. When I try the wide setting, even more so. What am I doing wrong? I normally edit with HDV so this is kinda new for me…

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Christopher,
The way of transcoding the footage (Toast) is not very clear for me.
That “perspective” is not a very standard term.
When you import the files to FC, what do you get in the Browser?
I mean: Size, Pixels aspect and field order.
Also, what says the Info Window when you open the clips in QT?

    Thanks Rafael,

From what I’ve gathered, there’s not many ways to ingest .mst files (ACVHD) other than Toast 10. To keep file sizes down, and since I’m only outputting for DVD, I used one of the pre-chosen selections (DV 16:9) which automatically rescales the image to 720*480 with letterboxing. I think the picture actually looks fine when played in QT. The inspector reads Apple Pro Res 422 720 * 480 – normal size, current size (actual) reading the same. 29.97 fps. Field order: progressive.

And actually, now that you’ve asked me to do this, I’ve just compared the QT image w FCP, laying them side by side, and FCP definitely needs to show square pixels for these perspectives to match. The ‘correct for aspect ratio’ is therefore greyed out. The pixel aspect ratio of the files, as shown in FCP, is CCIR-601 though… If I use this setting for Pixel Aspect Ration in sequence (not Aspect Ratio), the picture becomes distorted. Hmm… And I believe this is how it defaulted… (I assume I can set Compressor the same way, for output).

Now how do I get the photoshop graphics to come in correctly?

    Google ClipWrap.

Is QT who display the pixels wrong: always as Squared.

Your clips are DV NTSC Anamorphic.
You need to check them as Anamorphic in the Browser.
Then conform the sequence to the clips (720×480, CCIR pixels, Lower First).
