I have not updated the firmware. Good Call. I will check it out.

  • I don’t think Apple would be stupid enough to cede The mid-range DVD authoring and Transcoding market to Adobe. Both Encore DVD and Adobe Media encoder are decent tools but aren’t as mature as their apple counterparts. However when combined with Premier Pro, after Effects and Photoshop Adobe Productions Premium makes for a compelling package. You will absolutely see the return of color as an independent market of low to mid-market users has grown to support it as well as large industry centered on third party hardware. I don’t think Apple would be foolish enough to risk alienating its Professional user base just so Joe blow can edit YouTube movies in 8bit prores on his new IMac.

    Thanks Bob

I really appreciate your help. I know I am on the bleeding edge with this setup and that’s why I went Atto. My experience with their tech support trumped other manufactures I was considering, (Highpoint, Areca,) Although Areca’s support has improved there is a young lady on the phone from Atto tech right now as I type this preparing detailed instructions on how to expand the span depth of the R680 so I can create a 24 drive Raid 5 set. There is something to be said for no wait customer service. I will take your advice and Set up my raid according to your specs.

    Sincerely
    Christopher Delaine

  • Thank you for your help Bob.

My first instinct was to go with Avid ISIS 5K but this is my company’s first encounter with a shared storage solution and the price tag kind of freaked them out. Plus we just bought about 40k worth of Panasonic 3D gear (Don’t Ask) 🙁

Since our edit codec will be Apple ProRes 422 and XDCam and I only really need to support 4-8 seats at the most I decided to go with a Gigabit E solution supported by a stupid fast RAID set and Xserve.

Thanks Nathaniel for your advice on XSAN and MetaLan. I have had some really encouraging success with file sharing test between our machines and will hold off on the MetaLan purchase until after a through evaluation of the Hardware once it is in place.

Oh and Bob I will of course hold on the receipts just in case. 🙂

However with the current version HD Log for Mac or windows you actually can capture uncompressed, Pro res or avid DNX HD files with a Matrox, Kona or BM card with timecode. It works pretty well with importing files into FCP. I will capture a file and take it home to test it on my avid system.

3D is for the birds. You should give up on 3D and return that camera in exchange for an Alexia or a Panasonic 4.2.2 P2 camera Steve.

You know it could be said that the logical thing for apple to do is to offer all of their software for other platforms like they do with Itunes and Quicktime. I would love to Have final cut Studio running on a HP workstation. But then again Apple is a Hardware company first. Avid is a post production solutions company First. Both avid and Adobe are in the same boat for the most part with the exception that avid also make specialized hardware to support it’s software products. I currently work at a post facility that uses the latest Apple/Decklink solutions and the media and technical issues we experience makes me want to bang my head against the wall on a daily basis. Right now as i type this post I am importing EXcam footage that will me mixed with DVCPro HD and standard def footage. There will be a lot of rendering and wild format conversions to deal with but I suppose I could just leave a 9:00pm tonight. That is what post productions for me and a lot of other editor boils down to, Time. How much is your time worth? Right now the only real advantage Final cut has on a comparable avid edit suit is lower cost third party capture hardware. In my opinion 5 to 7 k extra for a mojo DX box is negligible next to the cost of Cameras, Decks, HD monitors and decent Audio equipment. Hell, an HD waveform and vector scope is like 10K! I shutter to think about how much time i waste waiting for Final cut to do some random mpeg conform, Rerender lost renders or to track down footage because a coworker sunk in during lunch to use my suite but didn’t tell me and did not change my settings back. I fully intend to upgrade My personal avid system to MC5 and a new CPU because quite frankly I’ve got S@#%t to do.
