New Mac Pro – ATI 5770 and no USB 3 ?

12 cores, no CUDA option and no USB 3?
Are we excited or disappointed?

Uh, Phil? I want a system with USB 3 and a BluRay recorder.

Well obviously Mark, you’re using it wrong. Apple has given you a billion possible ways to use the computer. Use it their way……
Of course the BluRay recorder has been available for four years now through third party vendors so that’s not an issue. What you’re really asking for is the native BluRay support in the Studio suite that goes beyond the very basic Share function we have now (that is not very useful)
Really a shame because BMD really did create a very cool USB 3 I/O device that is relegated to PC only at the moment.

July 27, 2010 at 2:19 pmOf course, the US Store has yet to be updated. Don’t expect anything different than the UK site but interesting that they didn’t update all the sites at once.

July 27, 2010 at 2:31 pmLooks like a pretty minor update.
Will those video cards work in my 2009 Mac Pro? I’d be interested to see a video card that can support dual LED’s with MiniDisplay Port.

July 27, 2010 at 2:36 pmThe dual gigabit ethernet ports, that support jumbo frames are interesting. I know that is commonly used on servers, but I’m curios to see how people will use that with FCP.
The lack of Blue Ray is a bummer, though.

July 27, 2010 at 4:06 pmYeah, I didn’t really expect Blu-ray drives to ship in the new Mac Pro’s. With Apple’s stance on BD, if other people are offering burners why should Apple bother? What I would like to see is both the OS and Final Cut Studio to be able to do more than just “share” BD. I’d like to be able to check my Blu-ray burned discs on my Mac Pro not just the PS3.
Not having USB 3.0 was a bit strange, but I guess they might be waiting until there are LOTS more USB 3 peripherals? Who knows? This is Apple we’re talking about and their motives are about as easy to guess as traveling at light speed without a Warp Drive Engine.

But there really isn’t a lack of BluRay. We’ve had a blu ray burner in our Mac Pro going on four years now. It’s available through third party and definitely cheaper than what Apple would offer. It’s like buying a graphics card, video card or additional RAM from an outside vendor.
The lack of USB 3 support is really the big bummer.

July 27, 2010 at 4:20 pmI was going to buy a new MacPro anyway (I’ve been editing on my MacBook Pro). But, it would be nice to have the price of the Blue Ray already included in the price of the computer (by providing a BluRay drive as a standard feature of the new MacPro). Now I have to budget for an additional drive. It’s no big deal, I won’t really need a BlueRay until later – but it would have been nice to have it included in their MacPro.

July 27, 2010 at 4:26 pmJust going by the specs page it looks like ATi-only for GFX cards which means no support for Avid or Premiere Pro. This plus things like no USB 3.0 means I’ll either pick up a previous gen machine or wait until the next upgrade cycle when it comes time to retire my first gen Mac Pro.
