I couple of years ago I did an interview with Avid as Im a feature editor that uses their products quite a bit on higher budget films. At the time I mentioned the hardware cost issue that I have with Avid and asked if they would ever wise up and open up the Media Composer software to thrid party I/O companies like AJA. He smiled and said just wait…..

Now I have seen Avid recently let companies like Maxx Digital supply “Avid Approved” RAIDS which in the past they never would have done. Ive heard rumblings from AJA about support….doesnt this seem like the logical evolution for Avid? Am I nuts here? Imagine have a system that runs Avid or FCP out of the same hardware. That is what I am hoping for one day soon. Avid’s best selling point IMHO is the Media Composer software, not the overpriced hardware that they create….. Just some thoughts…

You know it could be said that the logical thing for apple to do is to offer all of their software for other platforms like they do with Itunes and Quicktime. I would love to Have final cut Studio running on a HP workstation. But then again Apple is a Hardware company first. Avid is a post production solutions company First. Both avid and Adobe are in the same boat for the most part with the exception that avid also make specialized hardware to support it’s software products. I currently work at a post facility that uses the latest Apple/Decklink solutions and the media and technical issues we experience makes me want to bang my head against the wall on a daily basis. Right now as i type this post I am importing EXcam footage that will me mixed with DVCPro HD and standard def footage. There will be a lot of rendering and wild format conversions to deal with but I suppose I could just leave a 9:00pm tonight. That is what post productions for me and a lot of other editor boils down to, Time. How much is your time worth? Right now the only real advantage Final cut has on a comparable avid edit suit is lower cost third party capture hardware. In my opinion 5 to 7 k extra for a mojo DX box is negligible next to the cost of Cameras, Decks, HD monitors and decent Audio equipment. Hell, an HD waveform and vector scope is like 10K! I shutter to think about how much time i waste waiting for Final cut to do some random mpeg conform, Rerender lost renders or to track down footage because a coworker sunk in during lunch to use my suite but didn’t tell me and did not change my settings back. I fully intend to upgrade My personal avid system to MC5 and a new CPU because quite frankly I’ve got S@#%t to do.

    Hi Folks,
well I was very astonished to read some time ago that Avid was opening it`s former Highend Application Avid DS to Aja Hardware. Right now they are selling their premium product with a NON Avid hardware. Avid`s been always up to seeling high priced hardware. That has been their way of doing business. Right now it seems that Avid has realised that you don`t need some specialized hardware to do the job. Don`t get me wrong, I like the Avid workflow but in nower days you can`t charge someone 10K`s for Hardware that is doing the same stuff as a AJA kona HD Dual link. That`s why they are selling the DS with exactly that card. A little more than 2 years ago you had to pay more than 90K´s for a Avid Nitris hardware (not the DX series). In the end it boils down to what you are used to. In times of tapeless workflow cheaper hardware seems quite alluring.I love the the Avid workflow for its consistency but it has it`s flaws (AMA mode in Version 3.5) I hope that Avid keeps up the robust engine with all its flaws and opens up to new hardware. If not we are all going to edit on FCP due to cost money.

    Hans
