[Bendex] “I would do anything and pay ANYTHING to have this feature work.”

About $800 bucks for a Decklink Extreme card to give you uncompressed component output. Will look better than the compressed DV signal thru FW any day.

Well, I say that and loaded the FCP project and the media is offline. Seems in the last year since I shot it I dumped the files. Sorry.

When I get a DigiDeck in here I’ll resample it and post it to this thread. It was similar to Claudios except I did a lot of other tests with Kinos and different lighting techniques. Sorry to peaque interest only to not have the files 🙁

See the post a few below about “Light distortion” I gave my recipe for it which also works well for horizontal if you add a tint to the duplicate. Plus like Trapcode starglow it works off of the brightest points so you may not need to track anything. If nothing else, use sloppy garbae mattes to isolate areas where you want streaks to interact.

You can check out Claudio Miranda’s website quicktimes where he’s testing the old Panavision C-Series lenses and the Primos. Both Anamorphic.

I did a bunch of my own lens flare tests with the same C-series lenses if anybody has any intest in me posting it.

No masks, no radial blur. Very simple:

Animate the scale from 100% to an extreme close-up of where you want to zoom to. Animate the anchor position as well so it zooms into where you want it to go. Make sure the animation is extremely quick over a few frames. Animate the opacity from 100 to 0 over a few frames in the middle of the zoom so it transitions to the other layer.

Turn on motion blur. However the default setting of 180 is pretty mild so change the comp settings to something higher like I used 220 in this example.

Don’t worry about zooming into something too close because the smear of the motion blur hides the lower res.

The key to these transitions is nice and quick, too slow and the effect is blown.

The other key is to match things in the frame that seem logical. Like in my example I zoomed into my wife’s face, then transitioned to another picture of her with her eyes roughly in the same place. If you just arbitrarily zoom between to unrelated shapes, the effect isn’t as seemless.

I posted my preset. I’m sure you will have to modify the levels and sat a bit for your footage.

This is for AE 6.5. Select your layer. Go to the Animation Menu. select APply animation preset and select this preset.

2 notes. Actually make sure the posterize time is first in the stack. Also I was wrong about noise. More like 20 – 30 instead of 5ish.

That was done in camera by setting the phase of the gate to let light in while the claw pulls the next frame of film creating a streak.

In AE you can get a similar look by duplicating the footage. On the top duplicate, use levels to crush down the image so only the brighter parts of the image or still visible. Add a hue/sat to drop the saturation a lot since you crushing levels just boosted the saturation through the roof. So use the hue sat to bring the sat back in balance. Now add a directional blur set to vertical (or horizontal if you wish) and crank it waaay up. Set this top duplicate layer to SCREEN transfer mode.

Then you will want to go back to the levels and adjust till it’s right for the effect you want.

December 28, 2005 at 5:57 pm in reply to: How to get Flare with alpha channel?

I always use flares using SCREEN transfer mode. I have never found a need to do an alpha personally. But you can try AE Unmult which should do the trick. It’s out there somewhere for free.

But I actually last week made a lens flare in AE and brought it into the DS and Screen Transfered it (except in DS it’s called ADD Non-clipping) and it looks great.

When I think of the typical zoom transition, it’s just that without clouds. I did an example, is this what you are talking about:
