Most people I’ve seen do lightsabers use classic roto techniques. But make sure your mask incorporates the motion blur from your sword you shot. Rather than trying to ignore the motion blur.

In Pro Tools you set two points and punch in how many measures and time signature and it will calculate the tempo. The further away the markers the more accurate.

I was in Montreal last June for the F1 GP. Out on that strip of restaurants. I look up and there’s Softimage. I know it’s dumb but I thought that’s so cool. I wanted to go for a tour 🙂
But tell them to go finish DS 8.0, I’m getting sick of waiting , lol.

Don’t know if it matters but Alias, Discreet/autodesk, and Softimage/Avid are all in Montreal and Toronto (somebody correct me if I’m wrong).

Absolutely brilliant. I’ve been wanting this in an NLE for years. Just like pro tools. It will figure out the tempo and set the bpm for you.
Now can you write this for Avid and FCP? 😉

I would think make a lumpy piece of geometry and use color and bump mapping to make it look like general trash. And throw in some true geometry sticking out of it here and there. I would think between the two it should do a good effect w/o explicitly creating all the junk with geometry.

Great. Now of course since they have ‘depth’ you can turn on your ‘Depth of field’ effect and use the focus to bring the viewer’s eye to where you want.

The film flash thing as an effect for me died 7 or 8 years ago (although not very cool to begin with). If it’s one thing that drives me crazy it’s a lifestyle drug commercial with ppl staring into the lens while the cam op starts and stops the cam to put flashies all over it. Tony Scott manages to still flashies without being cheesy, but I still find it a bit annoying.
But as a digital ‘dip to color’ transition, I think it’s not so offensive for some TV programming. Especially to jump cut interview dialog and what not.
But to me any transition other than a cut can easily become an excercise in the depths of cheese. Manufacturers and develepors put them in hardware and software for wedding videographers (so-to-speak). Resist the need to actually use them unless you’re doing a campy nod to the 80’s 😉
But to me transitions aren’t so cut and dry anymore. Modern motiongraphics manages to present visual content in ways that are so brilliantly cut, chopped, and presented with moving design that the whole piece becomes a journey rather than an obvious edit with obvious transitions.
