    anyone know a clever way to make a junk pile… just a bunch of models randomly placed on top of each other, so that none of them intersect.

    I would think make a lumpy piece of geometry and use color and bump mapping to make it look like general trash. And throw in some true geometry sticking out of it here and there. I would think between the two it should do a good effect w/o explicitly creating all the junk with geometry.
