The 3 way color corrector allows you to sample and/or isolate colors with the limit feature and an eyedropper. You need to study up on how to use this filter, it’s all in the help files.

I have the same G5 as you and Shane, mine has a Kona Lh in it and still works great. I have had a 15″ MBP since last Summer, it has a 17″ Sony multi-format 720p monitor hooked up to it, very comfortable support for the G5, use both in tandem a lot.
I also route FW out of the MBP into an old DV deck with component out to a Sony PVM monitor for grading, great little portable system. It also has a 1 TB Firmtec 2 drawer RAID, works great.

I used a Canon A1 and I have to manually start the camera before hitting the capture button, try that.
Also, If your camera is like mine, it needs to be set to HDV in the playback standard in the VCR menu. My camera defaults to “auto” which will not work.

Joe’s Noise Reducer may help, but you can also try adjusting the levels to darken your blacks, just watch your scopes.
I think Nattress Big Box of Tricks has a noise reduction filter as well.

Similar to what Walter did, I have commissioned “sound-alikes” many times. It is much cheaper than the real thing, but you still walk a fine line of infringement. I have heard that if it makes you think right away of the original then you have crossed the line.
To answer your question, I have never seen a place that has versions of the originals you don’t have to pay big bucks to use.
One of my favorite libraries is Fresh Music, who I think BTW are about to fold, so there may be some bargains there.

FYI
Last year I had a client send me some rips from Handbrake, I had to use MPEG Streamclip to convert them to files FCP could use, and they looked marginal at best. They did work okay in After Effects, but Handbrake is really lousy for professional work.
