G5 Dual 2.0 vs Newest MacBook Pro 2.4 base model
Posted by George Strother on April 23, 2008 at 5:21 pmLooking for some real world experience. Where better than the Cow?
Considering a laptop to use with an EX1 in the field and would like some real world experience of the performance difference between these two computers for latest FCS2, Long GOP Mpeg2 HD –
My system – G5 Dual 2.0Ghz, 5.5GB Ram (my best standard of reference)
Might go to – New MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, The vanilla version for $1,999. I would probably max the ram.
To those who have experience with both computers, would this give increased performance, about the same, less performance for rendering, conforming, timeline response, compressing, etc.?
If more or less, how much?

April 23, 2008 at 5:33 pmGet the new MacBook Pro. Not only will it run circles around the Dual 2.0, but it has that handy Express34 slot that takes the SxS cards that the EX1 shoots…

April 23, 2008 at 5:47 pmSxS transfer is the main reason for MacBook Pro, if it’s also is a better edit station my G5 may get retired to render station work.
I recall you had a G5 DP2.0, do you have a new MacBook Pro 2.4 now?

April 23, 2008 at 5:51 pmI still have the DP 2.0 at home, but I bought a new MacPro for work. And I still use my Powerbook G4, as I work with Panasonic P2 and the PCMCIA slot works perfectly with that card.

April 23, 2008 at 7:31 pmDon’t retire your G5 yet…. I purchased the 2.4 15inch last December and Shane is right, it runs circles around my G4 Dual gig….. BUT, with big edits that take long hours a 15 inch screen will leave your eyes begging for mercy. And trying to perfect a chroma key on a 15′ screen will never happen.
I am just waiting for June and Apples next upgrades to purchase a new MacPro.

April 23, 2008 at 8:04 pmNate – Will the $1,999 MacBook Pro not connect to my 30″ monitor? Apple spec shows it will drive the 30″. Too much load for the graphics ram?

No beatings allowed, but cows can be tipped and Shane probably enjoys a good spanking now and then.

April 23, 2008 at 8:39 pmthe MBP will drive the 30″ monitor.
The biggest issue sometimes is monitoring (Broadcast) and storage but there is the IoHD and the MXO2 looks like a winner, the MXO is out if you plan to use the external monitor. But there are ways to make it work. For storage there are Express 34 cards for eSATA or FW800 that will work when you get back to the edit bay.
BTW my 1st gen MBP is neck and neck with the g5 Quad and the new MBP are a lot faster.

April 23, 2008 at 8:42 pmI have mine hooked up to a 24′ Westinghouse monitor and it is just fine…
The trouble is so far the only way I have found to get the “menu bar” (the top of the screen) on the 24′ monitor is to run both screens as a mirror…. IS there another way???
So all your tool menus are on the 15″ MBP screen…. it makes for a very clumsy work flow..
I have moved the windows around to all sorts of configs ,,, just too clumsy…..
Unless you can get your menu bar, time line, preview and canvas on the big screen and maybe the FCP browser, favs window on the MBP screen…. but how…. is it just another button away…… SHANE where are you…….

April 23, 2008 at 8:54 pmLooks like a re-patch for color grading with the MXO2 if I want see HD on the JVC 20″ nearly reference broadcast LCD or MXO2 out (will there be a bypass? hmm?) to edit on 15 & 30 screens?
Not quite as easy as my Kona card, but close. Of course, we are guessing what the MXO2 will really do when they ship.
Still no free lunch, but lunch seems to be getting less expensive.
Thanks for all the input everyone.
