Technically, you are correct, however, for whatever reason, FCP chokes on overly hi-rez images, others here will back me up on this, that stills should be optimized to 72 dpi at twice the frame size or so. I think that while your pixel logic is correct, what’s happening here is that file size comes into play as far as how FCP handles it. I can’t think of another reason.
I have run into this with huge files sent to me by clients which I have solved by reducing the resolution to the above specs.
BTW there is a boatload of discussion on this in the archives, one of the most debated subjects.

Jerry is correct, unless YT has changed things, I have several 16×9 movies on there and all had to be letterboxed.

Your images are too big. Knock back the dpi in Photoshop to 72 and you should see a big improvement. Any remaining artifacts can be removed with a bit of blur or a flicker filter.

You can play out to an Apple Cinema display via DVI, by selecting ACD full screen from your view>video playback menu.
Or you can do the same thing with a Martox MXO only color calibrated.
Only other option is to get some kind of HD card such as a Kona or BlackMagic.

I once did a job at an ad agency which was working in Flash, they were able to export as a movie which I could then edit in FCP. We had zero technical glitches. Believe you can export to any codec. As I recall I did the job in 8 bit, it ended up on a DVD and looked great.
If you do it this way, Live Type will not be an issue.

Noise removal is next to impossible within FCP. You need SoundSoap or Soundtrack Pro.
SoundSoap is pretty easy to use, but don’t let it go too far, same with soundtrack, in which you can sample the noise where it is by itself and remove much of it.
There’s a tutorial movie on the new features page for FCP Studio 2.
Sadly though, some noise cannot be removed by these without making the voice sound tinny, in which case you need to go to an audio house. I recently cleaned up a 5 minute show at a place with Pro Tools and it only took an hour, pretty cheap fix. You can output an OMF file for them.

My 2 cents on this EXACT monitor, which I just delivered to Goodwill for a write-off, I got mine from Newegg so no returns there, it was a great monitor, until it started shutting off on it’s own, regardless of my Mac setups. I used it with several systems, same results, and also with every input connection, including HDMI. I searched for days for a menu setting to turn off sleep or whatever, but the menu controls on this monitor are THE WORST I have ever seen. I was very happy to get this so cheap but totally disappointed with this feature/bug/flaw, and that I had to get rid of it.
But, I also saw something that looks pretty for a few bucks more, you might want to take a look. It’s the NEC 24″ 1920×1080 with DVI, VGA, component, HDMI etc. looked very good at FRy’s but it was $470 with a rebate, but you can get it for less online. ASLCD24WMCX. Great unit.

My 2.4 MBP is a great edit machine, but only because I added a 1tb SATA RAID to it. It’s not wise to tax the startup drive with media, especially HD.
Go look at the little Seritek two drawer and now 5 drawer units which you can plug right in.
