As I reported last week, Applecare arranged for a local repair shop to do an onsite replacement of my G5 mainboard and both processors. Unfortunately, the mainboard replacement is defective, and so I’m essentially out of business until the parts come in and the repair people return. How messed-up is that???

The people at Applecare are trying their best to help expedite things, but it seems like there’s nothing they can do at this point. Great!!! I’m not too pleased…

You have the perfect excuse… Take a vacation.. In this world of freelance editing you are either tooo busy- can’t take time off or tooo poor from not being busy so you have to sit near a phone and pray for work…

So your machine is in the hospital…. best excuse… go to the beach….

and don’t forget to send postcards…

    Dang, too bad, DR,

Hope you get it sorted out. Want to rent my MBP system?

    Have a wonderful day.

This makes me REALLY glad I have two edit systems now. If one goes down, quickly substitute the other. Well, I sorta always had that…with my laptop too. So I guess I have three…

David, do you not have a MBP? Time to get one I’d think…

[Shane Ross] “do you not have a MBP?”

Nope, I’m not a great fan of laptops.

Meanwhile, I tried to buy a used G5 in a hurry today, but nothing on Ebay is attractive.

I’m gonna take Nate’s advice and go play golf.

Wow, really? My MBP used to be able to run circles around my trusty dual 2.0 G5. I loved it until I went MacPro. I still love it actually. it has allowed much more convenience and capability than dragging around a desktop.

You should at least consider a refurb MBP with AppleCare. That paired with an ioHD is remarkable.

True. Throw a spike strip at the beer cart when it comes around.

I would think with a laptop you could work AND play golf at the same time!

This reminds me of when Apple replaced my 23″ cinema display for a high dead pixel count. My dealer called me in to get the new one but he tested it while I was heading down there only to find it had major problems. I think there was a 3rd defective one before I finally settled for one with the same dead pixel count as my original a month later. Apparently they access replacements from a local bone yard and nothing comes from the factory like I’d imagined.

No, that’s a service centre dealing with the limitations Apple has set for them. Warranty replacement parts are only available after the problem has been diagnosed and they ship a part based on that particular serial number of computer. So, there’s no option of getting in extra parts to fall back on if there’s an additional problem.
