Also there’s a good time plug in Boris Continuum Complete, called optical flow, although it’s kinda pricey.
For variable speed work look a Twiztor and ReTimer, both not cheap either.

Not knowing that camera, I can only make some uneducated guesses. In the VCR moce, open the camera menu and see if it has a way to change the playback standard. You want HDV, not DV or Auto. While in the menu, make sure downconvert is not on. Plug the camera into a Firewire port, turn it on, THEN launch FCP, and make sure there is not another FW deck connected.
Go into FCPs Audio Video settings and select HDV Firewire for control and HDV 1080i (native) for the capture preset. Then launch the log and capture window, and go to the tab where it says make new clip on Timecode break and uncheck that. Again, not knowing that camera, dunno, but it may work. Try a capture now for a test.
Another method is to capture to ProRes via Firewire, but it takes a bit of horsepower. I wrote a tutorial on it in here.

The cassettes are EXACTLY the same size, I played a DVCpro tape in my DSR11 last night,and it played great. I don’t need to play out to Firewire, I just need to set up a little viewing station for clients and AEs to view and log, so as not to tie up the edit suite.

I have NEVER had to render on Edit to Tape, Print to Video, yes, but not ETT. 99% of my timelines are 8 bit uncompressed going to Beta SP, perhaps that is a factor, but never had to render, even with extra clips in the timeline.
But, yesterday I did have a strange behavior with ETT, it was all working fine but I got no video on the tape, only audio. Ended up having to make my dubs on the fly. Dunno, never seen that before.

That can help, but it works completely different from the Blowout fixer, which uses channel information from a different channel to restore the image in the blowout. Quite amazing really.
