We had the exact same problem with some files out of AE this week. If you render to 854 it screws it up, but if you use 720×480 and stretch it with the distort tab it works fine.

Hey Wayne,
As Walter says, HDV captured as ProRes is full raster, even when captured via FW. I use this daily on my MBP and I don’t experience long render times at all.

I think your problem is your older version of FCP. FC Studio 2 works very well with HDV off that camera, I do it every day, plus, you can capture to ProRes, much prefered.

Note that only the very first clip you drop in will ask you about the sequence settings.

When you put 16×9 HD footage into a 4×3 sequence, it letterboxes automatically and the letterbox area is live and can take graphics or whatever. Note you may need a field shift filter if FCP doesn’t put it on, and you should set your video processing for High precision YUV set to best.

How were the video stills which came to life incorporated in with all the stills? I have the Core Melt version of this, and although I’ve only just started using it, I don’t see the kind of animatable features that were used in this piece.

You simply plug a FireWire into a VHS recorder and play it from the timeline. Then you’d capture from that tape and do it all again. Not sure how much effect you will get, think it would depend on the machine, there are much more predictable ways of making footage funky, but have a go.
