All these guys know their stuff, and they are right about the Sonys.
But, to answer your question about price, there’s a couple of JVC units that are decent. You can see them all at B&H. There’s a 17 inch unit that I have seen in use, and it’s pretty darn good, and it will save you a few bucks. Yo can put a component or SDI card in this one.
Or, as suggested above, get a used Sony, Dbay has a ton of them.

In my mack mail, when I attach a movie, it just shows up as the QT icon, not a player. Guess I’ll check with the other forums you mentioned, thanks.

Hands down, I’d go with PanZoom. It just seems easier, faster, more controls, but the number one reason is that you don’t leave FCP’s workspace. Stagetools forces the extra step of having to go into another interface. Number two, and this is HUGE, a PanZoom clip’s duration can change, and the effect moves with it. If you want to change the duration of an ST clip, you have to go back into the damn interface and re-do it.

On the cheap, Joe’s filters has a pretty go time plugin. At about 5 times the price is Twixtor or the slightly cheaper Retimer. Here’s the links:

I put it in FCP5.2 and it is very happy in there. While I was over at Lyric I also noticed a free download for a Shadow/Highlight filter for balancing underexposed foregrounds, pretty cool!

Save the file as a psd and make sure it has a layer. Drag into the browser and it will be a sequence. Open it and copy and paste the layer(s) into your main sequence. This never fails for me.
