Movie in an e-mail
Posted by Chris Poisson on August 8, 2005 at 4:12 pmNot sure if this is really OT for here, but thought someone might know the steps to do this.
What my client wants is to send an e-mail to prospects in which a QT or WMV file would automatically start playing. The movie is a :30 second TV spot. I have Compression Master 3.1, Sorenson Squeeze and Cleaner 6 with which to do whatever is the best compression for this.
Does this require an HTML link in the e-mail to the movie on a server? Or is there a way to embed the movie in the e-mail?

Bouncing Account needs new email address
August 8, 2005 at 4:20 pmI send emails of my :30 TV spots for client approval almost daily.
I just Export with QuickTime Conversion from FCP.
Then I attach the QT file to any email.
In my email viewer, the QT window shows up and I just hit the “play” button in the window to see the movie. Here are my usual settings for QuickTime Conversion (You can adjust to taste.)
With the Timeline you want to export open in Final Cut Pro:
File> Export > Using Quicktime Conversion
Format: Quicktime Movie
Options…Video
Settings…
Video compressor – Sorenson Video 3
Quality: Low
Frames per second: 15
(Check) Key frame: every 300 frames
Limit Data Rate NOT CHECKEDSize: Custom – 240×180
Sound
Settings…
Compressor: IMA 4:1
Rate: 16 kHz,
Size: 16 bit,
(Choose) Mono (or Stereo, if you think that it warrants the larger file size) -

I guess I wasn’t clear, I want to see the QT frame in the e-mail, sitting on the first fraame or having it just play.

Here’s what I said before:
“In my email viewer, the QT window shows up and I just hit the “play” button in the window to see the movie.”At least in my Macintosh “Mail” program, the QT viewer IS just sitting right there when you first open the email, parked at the first frame.
If you want to make this ALWAYS happen in ALL emails (I don’t know how that would be possible considering all the different types of email viewers there are) then you might want to post this on one of the “computer system” forums such as “Apple OS X” and “Windows Hardware & Software”.

August 8, 2005 at 7:30 pmHey Matte,
In my mack mail, when I attach a movie, it just shows up as the QT icon, not a player. Guess I’ll check with the other forums you mentioned, thanks.

August 8, 2005 at 8:47 pmIncidentally, if both parties have broadband it would so much easier to use a VOIP app like Skype (www.skype.com) to do super quick and easy file transfers without having to make them small enough for email. Export scene to Photo JPEG codec and press send, that’s it. Skype runs on Mac, Windows, Linux etc and is freeware.
Of course you’d have to persuade your client to give it a go in the first place. But it could be the way to go.

August 8, 2005 at 10:43 pmEasiest way that I do it is to email it via either Ichat (mac) or Aol Instant Messenger.
Just create an account in either, have your client do the same.
Both sign on, when they show up in your buddy box, just drag the file to their name.

August 10, 2005 at 4:11 pmHey John,
Excuse the ignorance but I have no idea wht VOIP is or how Skype could send a movie. Can you elaborate a bit? Incidentally, I think it was you asking about PanZoom Pro, did you try it out?

August 11, 2005 at 6:05 pmHi Chris
Skype is similar to iChat and is basically (freeware) internet telephony/instant messaging with a file transfer function. It’s multi-platform and the Windows version already has a video version. Take a look at the website link I posted earlier, it’s fairly self-explanatory. Easy to set up, it works best with broadband.
Here’s a Wikipedia article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkypePS I was asking about Pan Zoom, I’ve had a look already and like what I see. Need to test it a bit more first, but was impressed by the positive feedback here.
