I totally agree. 8 bit is plenty good for SD. The only tiny thing 10 bit can get you is a little smoother gradient, but a little noise can usually fix that.

If you really want to save space, take a look at the Sheer codec. bitjazz.com

AE will give you a bit better scaling than FCP, but you can do a lot of compositing in FCP, if you know the ropes. You should optimize your stills in Photoshop, 72 dpi at no bigger than say twice your project frame size. This is usually enough for most moves and zooms.

If this doesn’t smooth your moves as well as AE, then do it in AE and render in Animation+ with a straight alpha channel and you’ll be good to go. If you don’t need an alpha channel then skip the last step

I have two FCP stations, one with 2 19″ CRTs and the other a 23″ Apple display and a 19″ Samsung LCD for my bins. I like the latter set up the best.

Yes you can assemble edit, but I don’t think you can to a dsr 11 cause it does not have RS422 comtrol. You only need to stripe a minute or two.

Hey Anthony,

I am using Compression Master 3.2 and/or Squeeze Suite 4.1, just did a show with 80 or so stills with one second cross dissolves, used Squeeze, no artifacts at all, smooth as butter.

Your second answer is confusing me. How can you get FCP to output timecode to tape? The only way I know of is to stripe the tape with the desired timecode and then assemble edit to tape, no?

Peak DV from Bias does a very good job of boosting the gain, and you won’t have to mess with all those tracks.
