Final Cut Pro Deck Advice
Posted by Ggparis on February 6, 2006 at 11:04 amAnyone got any advice on DV Decks. Am about to cut a 35mm NTSC project. I will need to make timecoded outputs for sound editors and composers and neg cutters to match EDLs. Also do some split track outputs. Can a camera acting as a DV deck with Final Cut Pro achieve this or are we better off getting a proper DV Deck? Can you layback Timecode on DV tape or do you have to use up one of the audio tracks to do this? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

A camera is never a good choice for any format of editing, always get a true VTR.

Yes, you can lay back matched timecode from your project to DV.
You can do a Search on this forum for lots of information about various DV decks as this topic has been discussed numerous times. I run the Sony DSR-11 DV/DVCAM and it’s been a workhorse for me for going on three years now.

Your second answer is confusing me. How can you get FCP to output timecode to tape? The only way I know of is to stripe the tape with the desired timecode and then assemble edit to tape, no?
Have a wonderful day.

FCP 5.0.3 added this feature. You can now output TC via Firewire. I didn’t even know about it until the Panasonic rep told me at a convention last week.

February 7, 2006 at 5:11 amInteresting tip, Walter. Does this timecode-out-of-firewire work only when FCP is controlling a firewire deck or camera, or can it be converted for use with RS-422 devices?

February 7, 2006 at 11:08 amthanks walter, tell me, does this mean you can now both assemble edit and insert edit to a prestripped DV Tape in FCutPro?
For an assembly edit are you obliged to prestripe the whole tape, or just the first few minutes, or do you simply crash a timecode onto unstripped tapes?
My background is Avid based so I am used to prestripping the first few minutes of my betas with colour bars and tone, then assembly editing to a set start point on the tape.
As for the Deck I have heard good things about the Sony DSR-11. The few problems I see are that it has no Timecode display, or audio monitoring. I need a deck that can work equally afficiently in NTSC and PAL. I will check the back forums for more tips.
Thanks GGParis

I’m assuming Firewire devices only. I haven’t tried this yet as I just found out about it at the conference last week. i”ll be testing this out with my 1200A next week when I get back to the office.

Yes you can assemble edit, but I don’t think you can to a dsr 11 cause it does not have RS422 comtrol. You only need to stripe a minute or two.
Have a wonderful day.
