Josh, I suspect its highly likely your hard drive is inadequate
for the task.

A single drive that spins at 10,000rpm is not enough.
the amount of throughput you need is just not there.

I have a RAID 5 and I can playback RED 4k footage
at 1/4 rez in real time.

It’s not premiere or your CUDA setup.

Your trying to move a gallon of water through a cocktail straw in
2 seconds.

Get or borrow a Raid drive…thats what will likely fix it.
Even a lower cost RAID 0 setup will have much higher throughput.

what kind of footage?

A single SD video layer sequence might playback fine
with a single drive.

You need at least a RAID Zero
setup to keep playback smooth with HD multi-layer editing.

have you tried setting the preview to 1/4 res?

I ended up cutting the problem area (just the main video track with razor)
then right-click, Reverse Field-Order.

Hi Aaron,

I’ve run into a similar pickle. I can monitor externally from
my Kona LH-e in 23.98 but I can’t stand the 48hz flicker my
sony crt makes in 24p mode.

And like you said, in fcp you could add pulldown for playout
on monitors that don’t support 23.98.

here is one thing you can do to add monitoring though
I don’t know it is the best solution.

create a 29.97 sequence.

copy all of your 23.98 sequence and paste it into the 29.97.

that should work so you can monitor. It plays back fine on my
setup here. But I don’t know what premiere is doing to the framerate.
converting it or adding pulldown.

this sounds like a fun challenge.
I don’t believe you can stream .aac to surround on a reciever…yet.
pcm, ac3, dts yada yada…sure, but not .aac as far as i know.

do you have final cut studio?

you can make a surround .ac3 with compressor. (not needing surecode)
but you will need the separate audio stems to do that.

so figure out a way to get a surround .ac3 made.

then export your h.264 file without sound.

then multiplex (join them) with subler:

Just completed our first project with Premiere Pro.

I can say with absolute certainty it couldn’t have
been done in final cut pro 7 in such a short amount of time.

Hours of 1080P green screen footage all shot on Sony NXCAMs.

Between the quick, professional results of Ultra-Keyer and
the Quadro 4000 to enable unrendered REALTIME play
back, our client was thrilled at being able to shoot
on our cyc and review Keyed footage within minutes.

what happens when you hook up the s-video to a standard
monitor with s-video?

Nice film transfer unit you got there.

I do some of that as well with 5-blade shutter / aerial telecine.
