  • Workflow for exporting 5.1 audio for playback over hdmi

    Hi folks,

This is partly a premiere question, and partly a hardware question. We create a number of programs with surround sound audio. We would like to be able to export them from premiere as single files that can be played in 5.1 from a mac laptop hooked into our projector and surround sound receiver via hdmi. I would like to encode them as H264 MP4s because I can easily export those from premiere and they play well with the quicktime player. Unfortunately, our mac system with a receiver seems to only decode AC3 audio properly over HDMI, and premiere seems to only able to export AAC audio in an MP4 wrapper. The only way I have found to export AC3 from premiere is with surcode’s bundled trial plug-in and that exports the AC3 as a separate file. Quicktime exports from premiere don’t seem to give an option for multi-channel audio, although I know the Quicktime wrapper supports it.

    My two questions are this:
Is there a one step way to get a single H264 video file with embedded ac3 audio out of premiere? Willing to buy Surcode if needs be, but from the trial, it seems to create a separate file.

    Alternatively:
Is there a way to get an H264 with AAC 5.1 surround sound to play over a single HDMI cable. Our receiver is pretty old, and its possible that it just can’t decode AAC codec. We would be willing to buy a new one if we knew it would work, but from my reading I’m not sure HDMI can transport AAC.

    Thanks,

    -Matt

this sounds like a fun challenge.
I don’t believe you can stream .aac to surround on a reciever…yet.
pcm, ac3, dts yada yada…sure, but not .aac as far as i know.

do you have final cut studio?

you can make a surround .ac3 with compressor. (not needing surecode)
but you will need the separate audio stems to do that.

so figure out a way to get a surround .ac3 made.

then export your h.264 file without sound.

then multiplex (join them) with subler:

    Hi Chris,

Sorry for the slow reply. Out for the weekend, then a busy monday.
Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn’t heard of subler. That program looks really helpful.
I was still hoping to find a quick way out of premiere without messing with separate audio stems etc.
Since we can edit with 5.1 You’d think there would be an easy way to export a single video file with 5.1 that we can play on the projector in our conference room. It just seems way harder to do than it should be. Subler looks like it will help though.

    Thanks,

    -Matt
