I had that issue since day one when I updated to CC 2014.2 released last fall (mac version)
It got to the point I had to revert back to 2014.1 and have been on that since.

I’ve had this as well.
what worked was copying the clip into a new sequence that matches
the footage, then stabilizing it, then replacing the old clip
with the stabilized clip on the timeline…sometimes it has
to be nested when putting it back…tedious but a work around.weird.

I could never get that to work either, just side car (separate file)
The only embedded captions I could export were .mxf like you .

If the last couple of years are any indication, they usually do the two yearly updates in June & October.

the issues I got with 2014.2 (mac version) were random spinning beach ball
as well as sluggish mult-camera editing. -
For Me 2014.1 was a great update and stable. (seems like every other release works well)
2014.2 not so much, so I reverted to 2014.1. waiting for 2015 to try.

I’d like to know as well as what exactly the .xmp files are useful for.

try exporting out as uncompressed or prores if you have the option.
I ran into that once in awhile with h,264 but an uncompressed export worked.
reboot the machine first before you do.

just for the heck of it, you might try premiere 2014.1 instead of 2014.2
Now granted I am on 2009 mac towers but 2014.2 was very unstable for
us. multi-cam editing was impossible to do and we experienced other system crashes while editing
simple TV commercial length sequences. Getting the spinning beach ball often, for no reason.I don’t know why, as others seem to be fine with it, but I can
say rolling back to 2014.1 fixed the issues I had.
