  • you might try updating to the latest gpu drivers and cuda

  • CUDA is more mature and Nvidia only.

OpenCL works for both Nvidia & ATI but is less mature.

If I was on your system I would be using CUDA

“a few color effects that won’t render”

    can you explain further?

I get pretty smooth playback and have the same setup you have.
but if I have a bunch of stacked layers or effects applied,
I pretty much have to render them first to get perfect playback.

    I’m playing from a RAID 5 array.

What are you playing back from? a firewire or usb connection would affect that too.

  • I always get nervous when doing an upgrade rather than clean install,
but the last two upgrades have been flawless.

backup or better yet clone your system drive first so you can revert
if there is a major problem.

I just updated 1 system same as yours (early 2009 tower) from mountain lion
to Yosemite. Everything works and no cuda issues. I did update to the latest
    cuda and nvidia drivers too.

also did the latest yosemite 10.10.4 update.

my flip4mac plugin wouldn’t work but a free updated fixed that.

    I’m running CC 2014.1

I haven’t had any issues at all with native media since I went from fcp to
the then current premiere 5.5 and its only gotten better with each release.

I don’t miss transcoding at all. used to spend days converting files.
    not any more since.

  • I can’t speak to CuteDCP (seems like a reasonable package for the price though)

But you could very easily create compliant DCPs with OpenDCP and it costs nothing.

I’ve made one DCP with it and the client was happy with how it turned out.

I’m still on CC 2014.1 (mac) (can’t use 2014.2) and on two different
installations it always closes the thumbnail preview every time.

    I’m with ya.

for me it’s the thumbnail preview always going away from the bin area.

  • could you not “motor through” natively with the files as is and set
the program and source monitor resolution to 1/4?
