Greetings, I am a mac user with a computer that was purchased in mid 2010. It has a 2 x 2.66 GHz 6-core intel xeon processor and 24 gigs of ram. I currently have an NVIDIA Quadro 4000 graphics card with 2048 megs of ram. The Model identifier is a MacPro5,1. I am having problems with clean play back in Premiere. It will hit transitions and begin to stutter in play back or if there are a few color effects that won’t render it begins to stutter there too. I am not rendering in other programs at the time of play back so that is not the issue. I was wondering if a newer graphics card might solve the problem. What are your thoughts?

“a few color effects that won’t render”

    can you explain further?

I get pretty smooth playback and have the same setup you have.
but if I have a bunch of stacked layers or effects applied,
I pretty much have to render them first to get perfect playback.

    I’m playing from a RAID 5 array.

What are you playing back from? a firewire or usb connection would affect that too.

I also use a raid drive so I don’t think it’s a read write problem but I’ve been wrong before

you can view resources by percentages with 3rd party tools such as openhardwaremonitor.
they will tell you if you’re taxing your video card or just need fast disk or cpu speed. a huge money saver, and best of all, they’re free!
