I convert AFTER the edit and i’ll tell you why…
You only have to convert the edit and not all of the possible “hours” of source footage. Thats a huge waste of time.

Minnetonka sells conversion software for dolby & dts to turn it back into pcm .wav or .aif streams.
In this situation probably not worth the cost.

grayed out options are usually un-grayed out by making a copy or changing parameters.
make a copy of a preset.
turn on the resize controls, set it for best resizing.
on one of the other tabs you can specify the size.
another method is to simply render it at 960×540 through after effects or motion, then bring it into compressor and change the resizing attribute to 100% original size.

I don’t know for sure, but adobe media encoder might do that.
mpeg2 will not do certain sizes though this size is divisible by 1920 evenly so it should work.
You can get compressor to do other sizes, you will have to make a copy of a preset then just change it to a custom size. It’s in the properties section, you just have to find it.
