  • Kona Lhi DVCPRO HD 23.98 Mystery Problem

Posted by Matt Callac on May 24, 2011 at 10:21 pm

We’re having a really strange problem with one of our Edit systems and I’m looking for help. The guys at AJA are baffled by this problem we are having as well. I’m looking for a few people who are running the exact same OS/Quicktime as us to do tests and see if they get the same result.

    Mac OSX version 10.6.7
    Quicktime 7.6.6

When we capture DVCPro HD Material Shot at 23.98 Via SDI (using the AJA KONA LH- 720P 23.98 DVCPro HD VFR easy set up) it comes in at 23.98 but has duplicate frames.

If anyone out there in cow land has the same set up please give this a try and let me know your results.

Here’s further info if you want to try and wrap your brain around it
    1) Our Lhe machines (same os/quicktime) do this operation fine with no problems
    2) When we switched cards in our own machines (put our LHi in a computer that had an Lhe and vice versa) the problem followed the card and did not stick with the machine.
    3) aja sent us a brand new card and we still have the problem.
    4) we’ve tried bumping down to previous drivers and firmwares and the problem persisted.
    5) when the guys at AJA were doing tests trying to recreate the problem they were not able to duplicate the results we are having, but they are 1 or 2 point releases behind on their OS and they did not have quicktime 7 loaded on their machine.

    Thanks

P.S. I’m cross postiing in the Kona Forum.

It’s impossible that QT7 wasn’t loaded on AJAs machine.

You aren’t capturing bars, are you?

Interesting. Well the guy I talked to that day said they didn’t have it loaded.

No. we have not been capturing bars in the most recent tests we’ve been doing. I don’t recall, but I seem to remember we might have captured a little piece of bars when we originally started having this problem. But in all the tests We’ve just used a random section of the tape that has decent enough motion to see the motion to know if we’re getting repeats. (it’s spokesperson on camera stuff).

Bars on Varicam tapes, are not flagged with your shooting frame rate. So if you start a VFR capture in bars, you captures won’t work correctly.

This is a fresh log and capture? Also had some different comments in the Kona forum.

Didn’t know bars aren’t flagged, but initially thought bars could have been the problem. So no bars after that in all our tests.

Always fresh project fresh log and capture.

From your post on the other forum.
[Jeremy Garchow] “If you open the AJA control panel, check the timecode section and click the ‘VFR’ check box, hit play on your tape, what do you see? (I think it’s in the tc tab, I cant remember off the top of my head Brain is full at the moment).

Are you using the Panasonic 720p deck control setting?

The ones that work, is it from the same deck or different?

How about trying a ProRes 720p VFR setting. Does it work then?

Timecode section on the panel has the user bits checkbox and when clicked it says 24fps Just went through all the tabs in the control panel and I don’t see a VFR checkbox, and don’t ever recall coming across one.

Deck control settings being used are AJA Kona LHi 59.94 VFR Panasonic VTR A

Have always been using the same deck when it works and when it doesn’t

Tried prores just now… Same problem

Matt do you get this problem when using the aja capture utility?

Yes. Still have the problem going through the VTR Exchange.

User Bits. That’s it. It was “Varicam” at first, then I think it was “VFR”, now it’s “User Bits”. That’s the one I was talking about.

If the problem follows the card, then it’s gotta be either the driers for the card, or the card itself. It seems that everything you have is setup correctly.

Well they sent us an entirely new card and it still has the problem. We also bumped down to a version 7.5 of the driver and still had the same problem.

I’m trying to get someone else out there in the internet world who has the same Card (kona LHi) and OS (10.6.7) to test and see what they come up with. I’m thinking that in a recent OS point update it’s causing some random little unforseen software glitch. That’s my best guess.
