  • Creating an MPEG2 at 960×540

Posted by Andrew Sones on May 26, 2011 at 11:51 am

Hi, thanks in advance for any response!

I have a client asking for an MPEG2 at 960×540, would anyone know how i can get to this state as either an .mpeg or .m2v.

I can get up to 720×576 using compressor, but no higher. IS IT POSSIBLE?

I rarely work with MPEG format so any help and advice would be appreciated.

Custom sizes are not possible with Compressor. Its only capable of making compliant files for specific purposes like DVD’s.

Ok, thanks John. So compressor is out.
Any ideas how to get one out of Final Cut or After Effects perhaps?

I can get a good 640×360 .m2v out of AE, but again I cant seem to get it up to 960×540.

    Anyone have a solution?
    Many thanks.

I’ve heard there are a few programs that can do it, but I have never encountered one. The MPEG 2 spec is pretty rigid.

Why does the client want this? There are many other codecs that are more flexible and easier to encode.

Is the client confusing MPEG 2 and MPEG 4?

I don’t know for sure, but adobe media encoder might do that.

mpeg2 will not do certain sizes though this size is divisible by 1920 evenly so it should work.

You can get compressor to do other sizes, you will have to make a copy of a preset then just change it to a custom size. It’s in the properties section, you just have to find it.

Can you explain this further…. I have Compressor open now, and did what you said, but there is no way to change the size that I can see. Everything remains greyed out. You can only use standard sizes.

grayed out options are usually un-grayed out by making a copy or changing parameters.

make a copy of a preset.

turn on the resize controls, set it for best resizing.

on one of the other tabs you can specify the size.

another method is to simply render it at 960×540 through after effects or motion, then bring it into compressor and change the resizing attribute to 100% original size.

To my knowledge you can not change the MPEG 2 size in Compressor. You must use the pre-determined sizes and select from that. But you can however, change the size to whatever you want with some other codec, like h.264.

i know this is an old post but was kind of curious myself.
