My understanding is that since HDV is already in the Mpeg-2 format, you don’t need Compressor. All you are doing is re-compressing it, which is undesirable.

It looks great to me. I put together my own pocket drive using a firewire enclosure from Firewire Depot and a Hitachi Travelstar 7200 drive. It works flawlessly, but you need to use it in a well ventilated area, beacuse it gets pretty hot. The nice heatsinks on the G-tech look like the answer to me. I’m assuming that the G-tech uses the same Hitachi drive. The downside is that it’s only 60-gig.

  • Try collapsing your multiclip first. You can uncollapse it afterwards.

    Amber,

Look at thread below titled “Capturing Non-Controllable Device” dated July 19.

Not only is Compressor slow as molasses, but I can’t seem to get a decent looking MPEG-2 encode using VBR.

I ran into this, Dan. In fact, I’ve spoken to Apple about it, without much success. What I discovered is that if you have a deck or camera connected to your computer by firewire, you must shut it down, and turn off the firewire selections in your A/V settings in FCP. Then it works. I reported this problem on this forum a while back, but I guess not many people do audio-only capturing. The fact that you are having this problem confirms that this might be a bug. It might help if you would report this to Apple through the feedback link in FCP. It might re-inforce what I’ve been telling them.

I burned the DVD, and the CBR version looks much better, but still not what I am used to seeing. Still some problems with pans. Dissolves look much better. I’m re-encoding with VBR, just in case it was some kind of fluke.

Thanks John, but that’s not it.

Yes. That’s the default. I just tried CBR, and it looks ok, at least in the viewer. I won’t know for sure until I look at it on NTSC. But, what’s wrong with VBR? Is it just me?

  • Does your “most recent” version include the update that was posted yesterday?
