[Aindreas Gallagher] “Dear sweet god – Charlie man, with the best will in the world… how do you keep a straight face on that one?

Look, I know magnetism is maddening at first, and I know they need to do more work on Roles. Hell there’s a lot they need to sort out. No deal breakers, just feature parity (which is close) and polish/optimization. But man, I started cutting a spot in Pr the other day and It was driving me crazy. Not the fact that I don’t have all the KB shortcuts worked out or whatever, but all the stuff I just couldn’t do easily. Like change a clips volume? Fcp 7 and X hit CNTRL + or -. Pr? Head to the effects tab?! And the tracks. Not the fact it has tracks, but choosing mono, or stereo, or hybrid, and oops! my stereo clip is dual mono… so I need 2 mono tracks and I then need to figure out where to put them etc etc. Stuff I never had to think about in 7, and don’t have to in X. Lot’s of little things like that. you’re using Pr now, you know what I mean. The beauty of FCP “classic” is that you can do stuff in the timeline really easily. No opening tabs/bins/mixers whatever. And the same is true of X. Even more so really. Ya just gotta get to the point where it “clicks”.

Now, if you can’t find work using it, then I totally understand why you’d not want to bother. But once you get used to the timeline, (and I don’t mean that in a bad way) X reminds me more of working in “classic” then Pr or MC. No question.

[Bill Davis] “The LAST thing we need is to turn the only real editing alternative in the marketplace into just another “same as everyone else” NLE.”

Well, there are plenty of alternatives. And Apple really do need to come up with a way to visually organize the timeline better. You get used to things jumping around, but Roles really do need to stick together. Some sort of Logic integration will hopefully address concerns of folks who need to throw faders. 😉

[Aindreas Gallagher] “the footage organisation possibilities presented by X’s tagging pool are inarguably rather seriously sexy. I had OCD thrill moments reading through there.”

I’m tellin’ ya Aindreas, That alone makes X so much more… productive for me than anything else. I know you hate the timeline, but it’s really way closer to the “legacy” timeline than Avid or Pr. If they get Roles worked out for better visual organization I’ll be a happy camper.

If nobody for whom you freelance uses it, so be it. You know how to use other tools. At the very least I think you’d enjoy cutting personal stuff on it though if you’d just grit your teeth and dive in. Let the magnetic TL do its thing. After a while, you’ll wonder how you ever worked without it.

I’ll use whatever I get paid to use. I still cut a lot on 7, and have been diving back in to MC and Pr just for giggles. When I open up X, warts and all, I feel like I’ve come home. 🙂

[David Mathis] “maybe Final Cut Pro X will give us tracks “

God I hope not. Expanded organizational capabilities for Roles would be nice. The next version of X seems like it’ll be pretty major. Or, they’ve given up. Everyone back to Avid and Pr! (gouges out eyeballs)

Great minds think alike. Or something like that… 🙂

Yeah, keyword collections in general are awesome, but smart collections are a huge timesaver.

March 5, 2013 at 11:49 pm in reply to: editing backwards on a magnetic timeline ?

[Bret Williams] ” I guess many don’t realize the main difference with X’s timeline is the vertical moving about magnetics.”

Quite true. For folks who’ve cut on an Avid, the X timeline isn’t very different at all. Well, Other than the vertical magnetics, which apparently drives some folks batsh*t crazy. 🙂 I think it’s more of a stretch for folks who aren’t used to gap clips as actual media. You can, of course edit only using connected clips in a “legacy like” fashion. But what’s the fun in that? 😉

February 27, 2013 at 4:55 pm in reply to: dynamic trimming.

[Neil Goodman] “[Steve Connor] “Are you saying that dynamic trimming makes your finished edits better?”

i think they would come out the same either way, at the end of the day my eyes and ears are the final judge. It just makes editing more interactive for me, it feels alot more natural.

That’s exactly how I feel about cutting in X. I rarely use the mouse when cutting and trimming. I think JKL trimming is quite nice, but – and this is obviously personal preference – I work faster without it. Totally subjective of course. Other than the shortcomings discussed above, dynamic (KB) trimming in X works as well for me as anything comparable. And clip skimming/cutting is an enormous time saver, despite needing an input device to utilize it. Anyway… Not arguing that one is better than the other, it’s all about what works for a particular editor…

Honestly, a huge plus for me when I cut in X is using KB shortcuts to manipulate audio. I really miss the flexibility when Im cutting in something else. Adjusting clip levels, slipping/sliding/trimming in subframe increments, soloing, muting etc. I feel like I might as well be wearing mittens doing that stuff in other NLE’s. 7 and MC are OK, Pr falls flat on it’s face though for me.

February 27, 2013 at 7:01 am in reply to: Serious Legal Stuff Happening at Avid

    [Chris Harlan] “ALL CAPS OUCH

No kidding. I was actually gonna buy a copy of MC, but maybe I’ll wait ’til they give it away for free as part of the liquidation. 😮

I need to add it to my collection. MC (trial for now), fcp7, fcpX, Pr, Motion, Resolve, STP, Logic, Protools, oh, and Reaper. It’s hard to keep track of all the KB shortcuts, but hopefully I’ll slow the onset of Alzheimer’s…

Anyhoo… I feel sorry for the employees. Know some east coasters who used to work there. Great product, awful management. The “we have no competition / buy expensive hardware” business model ain’t gonna work anymore…
