Things are getting messed up because you have them parented to the solids?

Unparent, change the solid settings, parent again.

  • You can increase the resolution without the need to re-rig. Just precompose, double the resolution then scale the precomp back to 50%. (for everypart you have rigged). I do this all the time.

    Some things to point out.

There are TWO forces on the plugin that you can control plus gravity. If you zero all out. It wont animate, though it will still be shattered. But in place.

Shatter is time dependant, the “shatter” happens at the layers in point. animating the strength parameter won’t make it unshatter. Its somehow counter intuitive at first, I know.

To do that you’ll have to precompose and reverse its time. Since you’ve got a take you probably will need to reverse the footage’s time, shatter, Precompose and reverse it back.

  • For which property? the “controls” property can’t be interpolated. Thats how it has allways been, AFAIK.

I think that example in particular was done with a 3d shape and an animated noise displacing the color on its texture.

You could also pull it off with 3d stroke. Just add a bunch and animate their offset and in/out points. That would give you some flow.

  • When you say length, do you mean some measure of the size of the layer or do you mean its duration in the timeline?

Both can interact with any property if you code it properly. Could you be more precise on what it should change?

I’ll give you some pseudo code example. lets say you want a layer’s duration to control the time it takes a circle to go from right to left. I would precompose the animation and add a linear expression to this precomp’s time remap property to vary in accordance to the control’s layer outPoint-inPoint (essentially its duration in the composition).

If you want it to control the amount of value the circle moves, I would multiply the circles position value with the difference obtained from a base duration value and a changed one.

  • I usually do a True comp duplicator (script run) and tint everything I want over to white and the rest to black (to keep the overlapping stuff)

Then I use this a luma matte for the main comp.

[wilhelm Hagberg] ” Is this the problem or something else?”
Probably. You should duplicate your mattes and set their material options to: cast shadow: only.

From the layer icon on the timeline seems like you’re importing a sequence. I’m not sure AE can create shapes from .ai sequences. I’ve never tried.

There is no such thing as a 3d scene in illustrator, just the perception of depth. There isn’t even much 3d in After effects if your goal is to combine both (Illustrations and AE’s 3d campabilities) you end up with a “2.5d” project, where you get flat layers displaced in the Z axis or rotated around other axis.

You should draw those buildings in a 3d application and render them with flat colors (C4d light comes with AE!). You’ll have the best of both worlds.
