  • Thanks John!

    Just a fine tuning:

Since I am dealing with speech, by using the ZoomH1 low-cut filter and record a clearer speech since the begging would make my workflow simpler and faster (Vegas low-cut EQ would be eliminate/unnecessary) Does it make sense?

  • Thanks for explanation John!

About the ZoomH1 low-cut filter, do you think it could be useful/recommended in someway to cut air conditioner sound, car traffic sound from the streets, telephones ringing from next door offices?

    Hi Peter,

    Many thanks for explanation!

As suggested, it would be great to find tutorials on Boris joined in some place. To newbies – as me – it would be handy!

    Cheers,

    Thanks again John!

Just a couple of issues to conclude my learning about “normalize” usage:

    a) In Preferences/Audio the “normalize peak level” is set as – 0.1dB. I am not sure if this default Vegas peak level should be the best one. Is there a better/recommended peak level as reference?

    b) After normalizing the mic recording I have realized a little electronic “hiss”. I applied a “resonant filter” on audio and set frequency to 8,000 (low pass / filter order second). I didn’t change nothing of the other parameters. Then the “hiss” disappeared. What I did is correct?

    Cheers,

    Thanks everybody for information!

After checking, in Windows 7 the mic level was already in max level. It seems the mic record level is low by default.

    a) Even low, the recorded sound is clear. Would be possible to record in this way and increase the volume (or normalize) in Vegas? Or the low level could cause any problem when increased?

    b) I also found in Creative Cow information about Levelator. I made some tests and the volume was increased + same level applied to whole record. Would Levelator be recommended to solve this case of low level recording?

    c) I tried Sound Forge Studio 10 to record using same mic. The level still low. I realized that in Sound Forge is possible to choose recording either in 1 channel (mono) or 2 (stereo). I couldn’t find this option is Vegas. Does Vegas provide this record option?

    Cheers,

    Hi Bob,

I have realized I need a more robust record solution. I caught your equipment suggestion. Thanks for that!

For now I am trying to deal with the mentioned USB headset microphone. In Windows the mic level is set to max.

What seems to be a workaround is to increase the low level mic record by applying the “normalize” function (mouse right click on audio event / switches). After “normalizing” the wave form was increased, as I attached in the image=> mic_volume_normalized.png

I am not confident about the use of the “normalize” function. Is it a feature to be used often? I mean, if this be recommended in the low level mic situation, it seems I will use it very often…

    Best,
    Cadu

  • Thanks for information Mike. I didn’t know about these methods.
I realized that my setting was already as “élastique”. I tried all stretch attributes available, but variations of mentioned distortion have appeared (best output using “soloist (speech)”. Also I have applied a fx “resonant filter” and set frequency to 5 (low pass). I achieve additional improvements.
Should “resonant filter” be a reasonable workaround to remove the distortion? There would be other workarounds that could be applied in this situation?

  • Thanks for the tip Mike!

I ran Vegas11 in Vista compatibility mode.

The problem with Boris Red5 still happening in the same way related by Robert (https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/15/863102).

The compatibility mode was not effective to other strange Vegas11 behavior that is not to set animation to Titles&Text (e.g. from none to earthquake). In a Vegas same session I have at most twice chances to change the animation. After that it is unchangeable in the same session. If I insert 10 Titles&Text after that, it will be impossible to change animation in each one. Just after restart Vegas I will have twice chances again and so on…

Maybe other random crash could be prevented by compatibility mode. But after I have used a whole day of Vegas 10 with Boris and other heavy FX beside other apps running together and don’t have any crash, I am tending to stay with the 10!!! I am going to develop a bigger project and I am without confidence to go ahead with version 11…

  • Thanks everybody for information!

Even Red5 5.2 crashes with Vegas Pro 11. But as said by Steve, Red5 works great on Vegas 10 as I have tested.

Actually, I have given up on Vegas 11. After intensive tests, even build 683 is unstable. I would say along a work day Vegas crashed around 10 times randomly. The funniest crash was when I sneezed on microphone when using “Dragon Naturally Speaking” (Normally I access programs shortcuts and commands by using Dragon). After a sneeze have crashed Vegas 11 my confidence on Vegas 11 got very low 🙁

    Hi Peter,

    Many thanks for detailed explanation.

After testing BCC Optical Stabilizer in comparison to Vegas default stabilize, I could say Boris output is great. Even in “smooth” mode I could achieve a good stabilization better than the heavy Vegas stabilization.

    Cheers,
    Carlos
