  • Vegas crashes with Boris Red5 and .veg file just disappears…

Posted by Carlos Silva on July 17, 2012 at 11:47 pm

    Hi,

Several times I ran Boris Red5 from Vegas Pro 11 (as FX) and a strange behavior happened.

First, Red5 couldn’t be closed, canceled or applied. Red5 still in action and it is possible edit normally. But I was unable to come back Vegas again. So I forced Vegas to close by “windows task manager”. After that the .veg file I was working just disappeared… In the folder just the .bak file was available. Worse is that the .veg file can’t be find by any search.

I don’t know if it is a problem either form Vegas or from RED5.

    Does anyone:

    a) Experienced Vegas crashes using Red5?

    b) Experienced the .veg disappearing?

    Thanks,
    Carlos

    Hi Carlos,

I have been running an expired demo of RED 5 for quite a while now and have the same problems as you do. I did mention this problem months ago over at BorisFX Forum for which they said they would investigate about my problem but never got any feedback.

If you are inside RED 5, it will crash when Vegas autosaves. Then your .veg gets renamed to .veg.tmp

Unfortunately I have given up on RED 5 as this made RED 5 unusable.

Seems their is a stability issue with RED 5 and Vegas 11,
this same issue you have Carlos, does not occur using
    Vegas 10 however.
Are you using the most recent update of RED 5, which is 5.2?

    Thanks everybody for information!

Even Red5 5.2 crashes with Vegas Pro 11. But as said by Steve, Red5 works great on Vegas 10 as I have tested.

Actually, I have given up on Vegas 11. After intensive tests, even build 683 is unstable. I would say along a work day Vegas crashed around 10 times randomly. The funniest crash was when I sneezed on microphone when using “Dragon Naturally Speaking” (Normally I access programs shortcuts and commands by using Dragon). After a sneeze have crashed Vegas 11 my confidence on Vegas 11 got very low 🙁

    Bye,
    Carlos

Carlos, have you tried the “compatibility mode” fix suggested by Sony support?
A lot of users have and found that it cured a lot of their problems.

Running Vegas in Windows compatibility mode may resolve stability issues when using certain third party effects.
Right click on the Vegas launch icon, and select properties, then click the compatibility tab.
Place a check in the box “run this program in compatibilty mode for…”
Then select the Windows version for compatibility from the drop down menu available. Click apply + OK.
We recommend trying compatibility mode for Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

    Thanks for the tip Mike!

I ran Vegas11 in Vista compatibility mode.

The problem with Boris Red5 still happening in the same way related by Robert (https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/15/863102).

The compatibility mode was not effective to other strange Vegas11 behavior that is not to set animation to Titles&Text (e.g. from none to earthquake). In a Vegas same session I have at most twice chances to change the animation. After that it is unchangeable in the same session. If I insert 10 Titles&Text after that, it will be impossible to change animation in each one. Just after restart Vegas I will have twice chances again and so on…

Maybe other random crash could be prevented by compatibility mode. But after I have used a whole day of Vegas 10 with Boris and other heavy FX beside other apps running together and don’t have any crash, I am tending to stay with the 10!!! I am going to develop a bigger project and I am without confidence to go ahead with version 11…

    Bye,
    Carlos
