    Thanks Ron

I have the more than 2gb of podcasts on my HD and every set of project files I could find. They’ve been an incredible source of ‘Wow’ to me. Was thinking less of instructional though and more in the vein of say a segment from a movie or some recognizable venue like The History Channel etc. Then be able to say “That was done in AE” with the help of Boris FX or any of the other great plugins – addons available. It’s AE plus the other information that would get the most mileage in my effort to make connections.

I’m grateful to you and your Mrs. for your books / videos and to all the crew here who welcome all comers with a sincere willingness to help and give up time and talent to those eager to learn this great app and craft.

    Hey Dave

One will always get the real lowdown from you and was hoping you’d join the fray.

AutoCad can do it all (textures, colorizing etc…) except for sequencing, with a little help from 3D Max. The larger part of the presentation fit’s AE’s do-ables. (Moving around the campus and a 3D-ish view) The real bits with a need for Cad are closeups of classrooms and only need one representative example. I know it could get as deep as I wish but will want to K.I.S.S as much as possible.

What do I expect from AE? Do some lighting, use some blur, manage my depth-of-field and sequence the comps. I can then move it to Liquid for the rest.

    Is that more realistic?

To be frank, I hadn’t looked to see if AE could storyboard but I have used Liquid extensively in the past for that. It would definately be beneficial here and a great suggestion as the giant looms closer.

    Again I thank you.

I just checked out Andrews’ tuts and I’m stunned. They blew giant holes in my idea that I wouldn’t need many layers. P’raps thats why you spoke up.

I have a decent dual core box with 2 gb of ram but I see now that I can run into both the troubles you and Dave spoke of, real quick. Depending on the customer’s bottom line for detail, this could end up being a very long up-river trip.

I have PS CS3 (Educational Ver) but am limited to AE 7 for the moment. Too bad as Vanishing Point is mammish awesome.

Thanks for the refs and the input.

    Thank you sir.

Truth be known, I have accumulated close to 2gb. of tutorials already and only lack the project files for most. (Can’t seem to find them)

It’s my mind you’re reading as that aspect of the proj will be a real challenge for this youngster and will surely be a request from the client regarding realism. (I think he’s seen alot on The History Channel)

On the other hand, if I get the AutoCad files and if I remember correctly, I have some options in depth and thickness that I can accomplish and render out in useable sequences. I’ll just have to look-see. If there’s an artist in me somewhere, he better show up cause I’ll sure need the help.

One could do nothing but fully agree with you. He says I have as much poetic license as needed but I’ll be asking him a lot of questions just the same.

I’m not embarrased in the least to come here regarding any aspect of the proj. You guys are awesome and I know I’ll have the best help I can get.

    Thanks a bunch.

    Thanks for your reply Dave.

These graphics are of a school campus the customer wants a “virtual tour” of. I haven’t seen them yet and also don’t know how in-depth he wants to get with closeups and detail.

What I’d really like to have is the original AutoCad files so I can render what I want, how I want it, and then just import through the Bridge without having to deal with the paper. (Arrgh!)

I’ve learned a lot here after lurking about for four months so you can bet that if he wants “deep” then I’ll be pre-comping a bunch for the entire trip up-river.

Quite a challenge for my first gig!

    With much respect.

I stand corrected. Have been told that the drawings are A1 size. (1682

I run a web server and several months ago had this very same problem with all the same symptoms. Came down to a faulty NIC on my server box. Dollars to doughnuts that if you change your NIC, it’ll go away. It was a low-cost fix that I had to scuttle a FL vacation for.
