if you shot it 24p then you have the “film look”… the keeping the pulldown intact (and editing at 29.97) doesn’t take that away.

[Arnie Schlissel] “Even if you’re only ever going to use the video on the web, there are people like me who will still insist on using a calibrated broadcast monitor. “

I’m one of those people too…

A broadcast monitor will let you start at a standard baseline and your video will show up correctly on people’s computer monitors that have been calibrated (ie the people that actually care). My QT exports of final material look fantastic on my calibrated computer screens after using the broadcast monitor for grading.

  • I was getting this message yesterday when prepping my friend’s sequence for color… it was a .jpg that was way too big (6k x 4k). scaled that down in PS and everything rendered fine after that.

[Jim Sprague] “I’d like to save everything in ProRes. They’ll be able to read those?”

Yes, they will just need to download the read-only ProRes codec from Apple. You can grab that here.

March 10, 2010 at 6:26 pm in reply to: FCP to 1080i 59.94 Fps HDCAM Master Workflow Advice

[Evan Wolf] “The files were imported as 29.97. But there were the lines. So I removed the advanced pulldown (someone advised me to do that, perhaps wrongly) and that is what made them 23.98”

I’m a little confused… So are the lines showing up in your 23.98 clips? or was it just before you removed the pulldown?

did you shoot 24p or 24pA?

also, you don’t need a special conversion to go to 59.94… you just need the post house to add a 2:3 pulldown into your video.

don’t waste your money on the 24″ ACD… just get any decent lcd for the computer screen (Dell, Samsung, etc).

You will need to set compressor’s settings to exactly match the sequence setting the station is using… no rendering should be required on their end if you do it correctly.

Find out if they want uncompressed, DVCPro50, DV, etc and if they want 720×480 vs 720×486… these are answers that only the station can give you.

doing the conversion in Compressor would yield better results as well… pretty much anything is better than just rendering in an SD timeline…

I might have to email Bob and pick up Scone Looks… seems to be a pretty comprehensive package to learn from. The looks themselves almost seem like a bonus next to the video tutorials.

What would be your reason to go to an intermediate codec?
