Alex, I tried changing prefferences and re-importing, and it didn’t make a difference. To be clear, the originals came in as mono, not stereo. So it’s not a setting issue, it’s a workflow issue.
I think it is just a lack in functionality, and am sad to hear no one has found an easy way to do this. Ann, I need to work in source because I am referencing TC numbers from a paper edit. Otherwise I’d just through all my raw into a timeline and start chopping it up. I will just live with it.
There’s a lot to love about Premiere, and it is quite powerful in terms of performance and workflow, but there’s so many BASIC interface functionalities that they seemed to have lost because they were too focused on the big picture. Avid, FCP, and other edit software you can solo/mute tracks at the source end before they get into the timeline with one click.
