Unless you know something I don’t know, I have not been able to make presets for audio transitions… The option Make Preset is greyed out.

YAYAYYYYY!!!! I jusr figured it out: To solo tracks from the source, in the lower right of the screen next to the timeline is a levels meter, and at the bottom of each track has an S for Solo. Clicking these while the source window is active solos tracks, so I can just listen to the Boom, or Lav, without hearing the two mixed together with the camera onboards. So there is a way to do this (as of CS6 at least).
Now to expanding the waveform, what I am looking is to alter the scale, so if the audio comes in quiet, I don’t have to drag the track super wide, I can change the scale so the peaks are more visible but keep track height the same. Avid users will know this as Command+Alt+K/L, there was no equivalent in FCP. I have noted you can expand the scale in the source window’s waveform view, which is helpful. But would be nice to do this in the timeline too,

Alex, I tried changing prefferences and re-importing, and it didn’t make a difference. To be clear, the originals came in as mono, not stereo. So it’s not a setting issue, it’s a workflow issue.
I think it is just a lack in functionality, and am sad to hear no one has found an easy way to do this. Ann, I need to work in source because I am referencing TC numbers from a paper edit. Otherwise I’d just through all my raw into a timeline and start chopping it up. I will just live with it.
There’s a lot to love about Premiere, and it is quite powerful in terms of performance and workflow, but there’s so many BASIC interface functionalities that they seemed to have lost because they were too focused on the big picture. Avid, FCP, and other edit software you can solo/mute tracks at the source end before they get into the timeline with one click.

Yes but that only mutes media in the timeline. I am trying to mute / solo tracks on the source side before they go into the timeline.

I am on a Mac and it works fine. BUT I had Final Cut 7 on this Machine and hence all the codecs….
ProRes Codecs live with Quicktime, not Premiere. If you can’t open it in Quicktime, you can’t open it in Premiere.
A Windows machine would not come with ProRes codecs. They come from Apple. So I would
a) try looking on Apple’s site to download and install codecs. Google “Windows ProRes Codecs” etc… You may need to be a Quicktime Pro package or pay for the codec (~$20 ish). You install codecs by dragging them into a Quicktime Extensions folder burried on the PC, not through Premiere…
b) my book says on labs.adobe.com there are some pre-sets Adobe made for ProRes, try that.
c) work in Premiere on any Mac that had Final Cut on it.

Ahh. Good work around. Much easier to move keyframes there and not affect volume.
There are so many things I love about Premeire, but there’s a good two handfuls of really basic things they overlooked.

Sad, I was hoping for a better answer as well. What you can do is in list view, click in the panel menu, and select thumbnails, then you can enlarge the thumbnails, and also sort by columns in this view.

Yup, I get a Quicktime, but it looks HORRIBLE.
As a point of comparison, here is an h264 QT vs an h264 .mp4 right out of Premiere, both set to similar settings, around 2 mbits. You’ll notice that the QT file is bigger and uglier:
