What format of footage are you using and what are your project settings? -
Is your preview internal on the laptop monitor or externally on a video monitor? also doesn your laptop use shared memory with intel graphics?

The footage the HG20 shoots is avchd which CS3 doesn’t support, there are ways around this addressed in this link:

also cineform is mentioned in the link but not NeoScene which is a inexpensive way to use avchd with CS3 if your computer can handle the requirements.
Also there are tape camcorders still available, the Canon HV40 is one, or you maybe able to find a HV30 or 20 -
AVCHD type files(various flavors of MP4, H264) are not supported in CS3 except for export, some people have jammed codec packs into CS3 and have limited success, but also have generated other problems for themselves doing it, the link below addresses this workarounds for these type files.

What presets are you using?, the video is 1280×720,30p probably some flavor of AVCHD, How did he get the files? transfer them off the stick with a file copy? or use PMB to transfer them?

i’ve created a timeline for the 16 ft x 12 ft screen

and a 1.333 aspect ratio.

Once again you need to know the specs of the projector, and how it scales, right now you have a 16’x12″ which is a 4:3 screen that you are making a 16×9 project for, you are using a 1920×1080 preset that uses sq pixels, but you are using a 1.3 aspect ratio, the thing is to find out what your equip. is capable of before you start the project. -
