I have no problem running both the HDspark and Intensity Pro on one of my desktops, Its got a Gigabyte GA-E45C-DS3R Mobo, Nvidia 9600GT video, with Production Studio CS4 and Edius 5.5, haven’t had any conflicts yet, I had loaded Adobe first with Intensity and then Edius and HDspark, I added a Express card 54 card and occassionaly plug in a MX02 mini into the mess also with no problems, I just make sure the proper presets are selected and don’t run any adobe when GV stuff is running. -
Edius Firewire into a dv to analog pass-through device is viable, if you have a converter, tying up a device like a camcorder or deck can be counter productive, also there is a chance of mishandling and blowing a port of the device, I would rather spend the money on a dedicated device like a HDspark or converter, major problem with GV stuff is that it is proprietary, which for win general software
was settled by CDC’s ruling.

I find Edius fairly fast, its approach to workflow is a bit differnet but once caught on it goes fast -
Ppro will do VSTs, whether it can use a compression VST with sidechaining is something I haven’t tried, I usually do things like that in Audition or Cubase.

No, raid 0 is the fastest of the 2, if you want performance use a raid 0 or a raid 5.
If you want to increase render performace, the easier way is to upgrade processor horse power, with a 32bit app like Ppro CS3 you are lucky to be able to use 3gigs of memory, even on a 64bit system, the reason is a 32bit OS even though it can address a 4gig memory block, is setup to use 3gigs of physical memory, the upper 1 gig of memory space is reserved for stuff like video cards, If you have 4gigs of memory insatlled the upper 1gig is not used, if you have a 1gig memory video card it uses the whole upper reserved 1gig, leaving approx 1gig for system use and 2gigs for App use, a 32bit app like CS3 is usually assigned 2gigs of memory, the only way to get it to use more is to have a smaller memory video card say 512m, have 4gigs of physical memory, and set a memory sw which allows some of the unused reserve space to be used for physical memory addressing, then memory usage is shifted around and CS3 senses the memory sw and uses more available memory, usually between 2.5gigs to 3gigs. whatever the OS doesn’t use. -

To get any significant boost you would need to goto a 2.8 or 3 gig processor (20-25%)($250-$300) without going to a i7 which would intail a new mobo and memory also, you could probably overclock your current processor abit if your mobo could handle it and squeeze 10-15% out of it with no problems. -

I don’t use ProTools anymore but I did have it with some M-audio devices and never had any problems, I use Audition now, along with Cubase.

What kind of AVI clips, Ppro is not friendly with sometypes of AVI, AVI is only a generic term, if you are trying to run highly compressed formats there could be a problem even with a quad core processor. -

If you are going to use Edius you need to use one of Grass Valley’s products like HDspark, HDstorm, NX, etc, it wouldn’t work with PC stuff thats cross app, like MX02, BlackMagic, AJA, and GrassValley has no solution for laptops either, I use a MX02mini for Production Premium on a laptop and desktop, easy to switch, I use the laptop version and have a ExpressCard 54 adapter on the desktop, the cheapest device for Edius desktop monitor output is the HDspark/HDMI out, it will co-exist with BlackMagic products and the MX02
