Premere Pro CS3 – upgraded to 16 GB of RAM and still slow
Today I just upgraded my work computer (Vista 64-bit Home) to 16GB of RAM, along with a Sparkle GeForce 9800 GT video card (1GB) (GDDR3).
Plus this system is Quad-CoreI was hoping to see Premiere CS3 and After Effects CS3 run with flying colors. When I opened up a session (720p) I was quickly saddened to see it running very similar to how it was previously with only 6GB and a super date cheap ATI card. Un-rendered, I was hoping to see some improvements. But there were none (as far as I could tell). And rendering seemed to take just as long as before. After rendering it did play nicely. And AE, I didn’t see much improvement either. That is with Multithread turned on and maxed out at 4GB in the memory settings. Playing from RAM seemed slightly faster when rendering to play 1080p video, but still took very long. From Render Cue, I did notice in the log from previous upgrade renders. It went from over six minutes to just under 6 for a shot. This is a 12 second clip.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to actually see improvements after this expensive of an upgrade? Is it because I’m using Vista Home Edition (64-bit) instead of Pro?
How can I take advantage of this processing power? I need to be able to work faster for bigger projects. Especially in Premiere.
Please give me some insight if you can. My boss is sort of impatient and is already talking about using the RAM chips elsewhere since it seems to be such a waist so far.

CS3 was never designed to work with 64 bit Operating Systems (OS). It will Max RAM Usage to 4Gig because it is a 32bit Application. CS4 was the first generation of Adobe Products optimized to utilize a 64-bit OS RAM allocation by tricking the 32-bit App in accessing 4 Gig of RAM per CPU core. But even that was limited.
CS5 is coming soon and will be only 64bit and won’t install on 32bit OS systems. It will be able to see and use all the ram you cram in to your machine (provided you are running a 64bit OS). I would assume the only PC 64bit systems it will work with would be Vista 64 and Windows 7 64.
XP is too old now and won’t be part of any new line up. XP 64 was never said to have been compatible with any Adobe Product.
Maybe your Harddrive setup is not up to the task of HD bandwidth. For any HD work you will want at least a RAID 0 setup. You didn’t mention your setup so we don’t know.

Do you see the proper amount of RAM in the system when you select My Computer>Properties?
If not, is “Memory Hole Remapping” enabled in your BIOS?

Wow. This is good to know. I’m not sure exactly what my setup is. I don’t think I have RAID 0 going on at all. I’ll find out. Thanks for the response.

My BIOS does not have the Memory Hole feature. And I did check, all the memory I installed is showing up.

I just checked. I think these are just standard NTSF HD’s. No RAID. Is RAID 1 faster than RAID 0? On iBuyPower they show RAID 0 labeled “Security” and RAID 0 “Performance”. There doesn’t seem to be a way around it. I just need to upgrade my hard drives to RAID. Thanks for this information!

No, raid 0 is the fastest of the 2, if you want performance use a raid 0 or a raid 5.
If you want to increase render performace, the easier way is to upgrade processor horse power, with a 32bit app like Ppro CS3 you are lucky to be able to use 3gigs of memory, even on a 64bit system, the reason is a 32bit OS even though it can address a 4gig memory block, is setup to use 3gigs of physical memory, the upper 1 gig of memory space is reserved for stuff like video cards, If you have 4gigs of memory insatlled the upper 1gig is not used, if you have a 1gig memory video card it uses the whole upper reserved 1gig, leaving approx 1gig for system use and 2gigs for App use, a 32bit app like CS3 is usually assigned 2gigs of memory, the only way to get it to use more is to have a smaller memory video card say 512m, have 4gigs of physical memory, and set a memory sw which allows some of the unused reserve space to be used for physical memory addressing, then memory usage is shifted around and CS3 senses the memory sw and uses more available memory, usually between 2.5gigs to 3gigs. whatever the OS doesn’t use.
