If that is really the case, then why can’t we take the firewire out from the HVX200 to any hard drive based recorder that can handle the Firewire date rate? Shouldn’t that function the same as an HD1200A deck without the tape? Or do we HAVE to use a Firestore device for this style of deck-based recording with the HVX200?

October 1, 2005 at 11:40 am in reply to: Importing VOB. files into Adobe Premiere ProMaybe thinking out of the box a bit, but if you really want to “EDIT” your current DVD content (ie, add titles, effects, lots of cuts, dissolves, etc.) then why not just capture it component analog directly to a DV video file? In theory, this is timesaving and would fix a lot of the problems you seem to be running into. Yes, it seems quite redundant to need to go analog from a digital source back to a digital file, but I think that may give you the most compatibility and useability. Just a thought…

If I understand you correctly, this means that I can shoot on the P2 cards until they are full, plug an external hard drive (Firewire/USB 2.0 combo such as Maxtor, Lacie, etc) into the camera via it’s USB 2.0 port and download the P2 content to the hard drives without the use of a laptop or other device?

There will be a Firestore drive released for the HVX-200 around March 2006 that will run about $2000 for what most people think is about 80gb or 100gb. It will record DVCPRO HD over firewire to the unit.

That is my point exactly. The memory prices for this camera are simply overpriced. I’m not knocking or complaining about the price of the camera itself or trying to make some pseudo-engineered hybrid “SoCanPan” HD camera on steroids. I’m just getting to the dirt of the matter, seeing what I am really getting for the price, and weighing all my options… that’s what I think a lot of people on this board are doing right now.
In order to effectively use the HVX200, you need P2 cards, plain and simple. For $2000 you can purchase one 8gb P2 card, which will be the largest card on the market for at least a year, if not longer. Until someone can come up with an alternative P2-style card, I really do not think the prices will drop. (Anyone at SanDisk listening?) That is the main reason I’m looking for cost-effective P2 storage alternative options, as well as the desire (and need) to increase my “tape” load to more than just 8-16 minutes.
Emery – can you share any info that Jan told you about the price of the P2 cards?

Wow, this is exciting! Only if Sony would make a pro or prosumer camera that did solid-state video onto these things, that would be awesome.
I’m very much leaning towards P2 is totally overpriced for what its function is. It’s a great concept and very cool technology (I even like the PCMCIA / Cardbus based cards idea for field recording), but charging $2000 for an 8gb card? At first I said, ok… the technology is new, the prices will be high. But the more research I’m doing, the more I’m finding out how overpriced it really is. And then to find out that Panny is working with Firestore for the hard drive based unit and that is going to run $2000 for the hard drive? Are they really serious about that?
I’ve been flammed a few times “if you can’t spend $2000 on a reuseable media card then you aren’t charging your clients enough” or “if you’re a hobbyist this is definately out of your budget”. I don’t fall into either of these categories, but I still feel P2 is overpriced – $2000 for 8GB is a lot of money, especially when I hear that SONY has made memory stick devices with high speed recording at $200 for 2GB. At that price, I could get 20GB worth of cards for the same price I’d pay for 8GB of P2, but probably even cheaper once SanDisk starts making them.

They seemed to go head-to-head with Panasonic for the prosumer and independent production market for awhile, but the specs of these two camera in terms of recording formats could not be more tilted to the Panasonic side.
I’m wondering if the tape transport on this Canon XL-H1 camera is to serve the same purpose that the transport on the Panny HVX-200 serves… just with the addition of HDV to put “high-def” onto cheap tape, as well as a DTE hard disk / solid-state media drive (whatever term you want to use for, what in the end, it is nothing more than a glorified removeable media / flash drive). Does anyone know if there is any sort of DTE solution available with the Canon XL-H1? Even if it is Firestore based? (maybe the same one they are planning for use with the HVX-200?) As with many people, I’m not really too thrilled about HDV and I’d like to use something else for HD productions if at all possible.
