if you only have 1 firewire port, try connecting camera to computer via firewire then hard drive to computer via USB 2.0 or else another firewire port

Again, this looks like it will work for SD video, but what about HD using the DVCPRO HD codec?

Personally, I don’t want to see edited footage from the camera. I’d like the ability to download raw footage in the native .MXF file format and see how it handles myself on my machines. That should speak for itself in terms of what the camera is capable of.

I’ve talked to a few resellers already, none of them are confident that I will see the camera by the end of December if I place a pre-order right now. I’m holding off until 2006 before I make my decision now. Maybe after I see some footage, hear some real user reviews, and find out more about the Firestore offering, the decision will be a bit clearer.

The Firestore drives will record directly from the camera WITHOUT the use of P2 cards and they will have a larger capacity… most likely either 60gb, 80gb or 100gb. You do not need a computer to “dump” the media to an external hard drive since it is recorded directly to the hard drive unit. It still remains to be seen if the drives in the Firestore unit will be hot swappable or not.
You could take a laptop on location and “dump” the P2 cards to an external hard drive if desired. Panasonic has made the argument that this may not be the best method because it is not fail-safe. From my understanding, they are suggesting to dump to their portable drive and then make copies on multiple sources: hard drive and data tape (LTO, DLT, etc), two hard drives, or other means. This is not feasible for many of us due to the costs and time restraints for data transferring.
Theoretically, you could dump directly Firewire hard drives and edit directly off of them without the need for another data transfer, but I don

LTO, DLT, and other “computer tape backup systems” are what Panasonic is really pushing at the end of your workflow, or at the end of a shoot. I guess do an IT backup of all your .MXF raw footage onto LTO or DLT… then edit… then finish… then backup all of your project files, media files, etc. one more time to LTO or DLT.

I’m going to try some HDV footage to see how well it performs in PPro 1.5.1 with the native HDV “upgrade”, then I’m going to experiment with Aspect HD in PPro. I’d also like to test the footage on a FCP system and Avid Xpress Pro HD system to see the results (they both require a native .M2T file to start and then it “transcodes” into their intermediary codec from what I’ve read).
Any help would be much appreciated.

use any analog to digital converter to do this… the ADS Tech PYRO A/V Link is pretty good and it’s very reasonably priced.

I think you may be mistaken on this one… from my understanding, you will NOT be able to perform this function without either a laptop, Firestore device, or a Panasonic field recording drive. If you have a source that says otherwise, please let me know, I’d love to see it for myself and that would eliminate a lot of my hesitation and concern with jumping into the HVX200.
