  • Panasonic P2 .MXF files and the Firestore DV File Converter

Posted by Brian Deviteri on November 11, 2005 at 12:47 pm

I read a few months back that the Firestore DV File Converter will be able to take .MXF material on the P2 cards and “convert” them to a format that will be editable on machines that do not accept the .MXF file format, currently one of these applications is Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5.1. I have the new version of the Firestore DV File Converter that I just received when my company purchased two newly released FS2E units. There is no .MXF format availability on the DV File Converter… at least not to convert to an .MXF format file.

I’m wondering, has anyone used the DV File Converter to take an .MXF file and make it into somthing else? Are there any .MXF clips that I could download from someone to test this out? Will Panasonic release a “special” version of the File Converter (for free?) with the camera? I can easily see it being able to convert SD .MXF material to AVI flavors, OMF, etc., but to take HD material into something else, I don’t know. What would you even need to convert it to?

    Any input?

    Hi Brian,

The DV File Converter Pro does this MXF to whatever conversion. And it does it very well. Right now it is working on DV25, but advances are in the works.

Also, you can use DVFilm.com’s Maker 2.21 software to convert HVX .mxf files into quicktime movies, .avi files, or even transcode to Cineform files. Editors that support Op-Atom MXF will obviously be easier to work with, as you’d avoid that additional step, but for users of Premiere Pro and Vegas, this looks like a workaround until the NLE’s get around to implementing MXF Op-Atom file support.

Again, this looks like it will work for SD video, but what about HD using the DVCPRO HD codec?

    Barry,

What editors support this Pana MXF currently? Only Avid? Doesn’t FCP do the same sort of conversion for itself (to QT) that Maker 2.21 does for others? I’m not trying to be contentious here, but just want to know.

    Thanks,
