You pluaralizing things for no reason? MacBooks. MacBook Pros. Nobody would say MacBooks Pro. Or Attorneys General for that matter.

That’s broken. The clips have to be offline – but however in version 5 it’s quit working. I can no longer make changes to the audio or track columns. It should be the audio column that you change.

I wonder where Jeff Ledellaytner is? Probably trying to figure out what is wrong with his avid! 🙂
I’ll add that I love Avid’s destructive compositing. Such a better concept than FCP’s. In Avid, if you create 3 layers of a very complex effect and render it, and let’s pretend it took 20 minutes to render. THEN you decide to add a 4th layer. Something simple like a lower 3rd or a pip. Avid would have no need to render. The 4th layer would play in real time OVER the 3 rendered layers, utilizing their render file as a single layer. And if you then render the 4th track it only takes as long as rendering 2 tracks. Not another 20 minutes.

Well, it knocks everything down above a certain point, on a curve. For example 110 might be brought down to 100, but 98 might only go to 95 and 95 might go to 94 and so on whereas nothing above say 93 would be affected at all. Which is alot better than just adding a proc amp type adjustment where everything goes down in much more of a linear fashion.

I’ll just reiterate what everyone else is saying. Your Avid is screwed up badly. There is no wait any different than FCP. There is something definitely wrong with the system you’re showing. And I’m not an Avid guy anymore. 95% FCP these days.
Also, the reason your bins aren’t being saved, is becuase nothing has changed. A little silly, but when you first create a bin in Avid it let’s you put it where you want and all and then it saves it. Bins are separate files (which is quite beneficial compared to FCP’s “one huge file” concept, especially for large projects, and so if nothing has changed, there is nothing to save. I guess it doesn’t consider reshaping the size of an empty bin a change. Move the bin, wait a little longer or add a clip to it and save it. Then it’ll stay.

I’ve heard the arrow tool analogy before, but it’s kind of silly since you do have to have the correct tool also selected in FCP. True, generally I do, but I might also be in slip tool, or the pen tool, which can’t move clips. When I used to do Avid, I simply had a hot key for the segment tool. So not different really than pressing the A for arrow tool. In other words, it didn’t really hamper me in any way.
But it does bring me to one thought. People are always saying “that Avid guy is so fast” about avid editors. I think that’s because everything takes more clicks or button presses that it looks and sounds like they’re working fast. And the best Avid guys are all keyboard practically. Well, 10 or 20 keystrokes to achieve what a couple click and drags will do sure sounds like you’re working hard and fast!

If ya can see it on your NTSC monitor, then you can record it. No you don’t need to print to tape or edit to tape. Many people don’t bother. Print to tape just makes sure everything is mixed down and rendered and halts other processes to give full attention to output in hopes of not dropping frames. Edit to tape is similar, but with deck control.

Did you make the settings change to your current sequence or in your user prefs? You’ll need to change it in both as the preference only effects new sequences.
