I was looking at possibly creating a website to upload presets/ fx to that everyone could also upload too… as a way of keeping the techniques forum free from the interruptions of the fun we’re having building these things 😉

But it would probably be best as another forum inside the cow as suggested…save have to log into yet another website, and also have it remain a open resource if you like.

Just thinking out loud (ouch that hurts this thinking thing)

    Cheers,

    Brendan

    No worries.

I think this whole new way of creating effects etc in motion and making them available and edititable in fcp is fantastic.

Was able test switching FCP X track displays using a keyboard shortcut to trigger a Keyboard Maestro macro.

It seems to work pretty good.

Here’s a link to a video showing test

    Hey this is cool.

Never thought of doing it using a single rectangle as the one shape to control both “crops” via an image mask.

Off to the pub early for me then today 😉

[Eli Hollander] “I’ve been experimenting successfully with generating templates in motion that are pre-set for various borders and shapes.”

I just posted a reply without seeing this post….seems like you have it under control by using motion. It’s the definite way to go I think for things like this.

Something to simplify this process can be built in motion.

You could build a motion project that contains 2 groups (left group and right group etc), then add a Object> New Dropzone into each group, and then each group has it’s own mask, one for the left hand split and one for the right hand split.

The crucial bit is to add the mask to the group and not the dropzone. By doing this you will have the ability to reposition the video without affecting the mask.

You then publish this motion project, making sure you tick the box that mentions about publish as fcp generator.

Now back in FCP X you can drop your generator onto the timeline, access the generator inspector where you will have to dropzones. It’s always a good process to rename the dropzones to something that’s useful to remind you which is which.

The only problem with going the dropzone route is that if you clips have sync audio you’ll need to manually edit that back in yourself.

Hope this has been of some help.

If you don’t have motion 5, I can put together a sample that you can download tomorrow when I’m back in front of box.

    Cheers,

    Brendan

It’s a bit of a hack, scrub that…it’s a complete hack!…. but I might run a test using the app “keyboard maestro” to see if that works by recording the action of clicking on the track heights parameters and assigning it a hot key to trigger it.

But you’d expect that functionality to already be there! Like what has been mentioned already, it’s loads of these “little things” that are lacking which add up to be quite a pain as well

disclaimer : I’m not associated with keyboard maestro at all, it’s just been a handy tool of choice for me.

I’ve looked high and low for this as well. Especially since some tasks are performed better in different track modes.

I’ve found my self using the mouse and clicking the switch way too often!!

Shift+T made it so simple in FCP 7, alas not here.
